Derby Birmingham Cheltenham Bristol (Parkway, normally) Taunton and Exeter in some combination are the best to try for normal fares. (sorry - listed them in reverse order for some reason.)

But a through advance purchase single is always going to be best if available.

If you are going soon (before 10 November) also try megatrain to Bristol - the service ceases when Virgin hand over the franchise

I am going to Brighton with 2 friends on Saturday 1st Dec and returning Mon 3rd.
Has anyone any suggestions on how I might try splitting this journey as I have never used the train to go there before?
    Thanks

Try advance singles for the full journey for a start - from £21.50 each, each way.

Another suggestion is to get cheap singles to/from London and then get a Southern daysave at £20 (total, for the three of you) to get to Brighton and another one to get back to London.

http://www.southernrailway.com/buytickets/daysave/DaySave.php?sEvent=TicketDetails - has to be bought at least a week in advance.

A further one - almost certainly cheaper but difficult to arrange is to get cheap singles to/from Bedford and change there to the FCC Thameslink service which runs through to Brighton and use a group daysave. However this is ONLY available at a few tourist offices so you'd need to buy it by post. Details (rather long):

    DaySave (Thameslink route only)
DaySave allows unlimited off peak travel throughout the First Capital Connect Thameslink route on the day the ticket is valid, on First Capital Connect services only. DaySave tickets can be bought from the outlets below but are not sold at stations or online. DaySave costs just £11 per adult and up to four accompanied children travel for up to £2 each. Group DaySave tickets allow up to four people (adults and/or children) the freedom of the route and cost just £25. Please note conditions below.

DaySave cannot be used before 0930 Monday to Friday. They are also not valid for travel on northbound services departing Moorgate or King’s Cross Thameslink between 1630 and 1901 for journeys to any station between St Albans and Bedford inclusive. Please refer to the pages headed 'Off-peak Fares' in the current First Capital Connect Thameslink route 'Train Times' timetable. However, DaySave can be used at any time on weekends and Bank Holidays. Our route map shows you the places you can travel to and from using a DaySave ticket on First Capital Connect services on the Thameslink route.

DaySave cannot be bought at stations or on trains. It must be purchased before you travel from any of the following outlets:

    Bedford
Bedford Tourist Information Centre, Townhall, St. Pauls Square, Bedford MK40 1SJ
Priory House Tourist Information Centre, 33 High Street South, Dunstable, Bedfordshire, LU6 3RZ
Sandy Tourist Information Centre, 5 Shannon Court, High Street, Sandy, Bedfordshire, SG19 1AG

    Brighton
Visitor Information Centre, Royal Pavilion Shop, Pavilion Buildings, Brighton BN1 1EE
One Stop Travel, 16 Old Steine, Brighton BN1 1EN
    Greenwich
Greenwich Tourist Information Centre, Pepys House, 2 Cutty Sark Gardens, Greenwich SE10 9LW

    Luton
Luton Tourist Information Centre, Luton Central Library, St. Georges Square, Luton LU1 2NG

    St Albans
St Albans Tourist Information Centre, Townhall, Market Place, St. Albans AL3 5DJ
  • Hi,

I have been looking on these forums and was wondering if anyone knew the cheapest way to get to Fratton from Biggleswade by train.

Would it be to get a Thameslink daysave and get on at bedford instead and travel to london bridge and then get a southern daysave and travel to Fratton?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Cheers.

Depends on your travel plans really, single there and back in a day or a longer return. If you go down the daysave route, you would be better off changing to Southern at East Croydon, Gatwick, Haywards Heath or even Brighton as you will be able to get a direct service to Fratton from there. The service to Fratton is hourly so if time is not that important then go for it.

    £38.00 for a CDR <-- Silly restrictions
    £60.00 for a SOR

SO since SWT have made funny fares now you can do the travel card trick at Clapham

Biggleswade to Hadley Wood - £9.50
    Travel Card 1-6 £6.70 off Peak = £16.20

£21.60 Clapham Junction to Fratton not London (as you got your travel card) = £37.80

Or London Bridge to Hadley wood via Horsham which is £18.00 CDR Southern priced. = £34.20

Plus you don't have the silly FCC evening restrictions on the Travel Card.

Could work it out even more if you know exactly what train your on and the stopping pattern.

What's wrong with starting with a Biggleswade to zones 1-6 travelcard at £19? Then a £10 Southern daysave via Horsham or Brighton or a Surbiton to Fratton CDR £19.10 on SW Trains??

Thomson1961 has the best idea a FCC Thameslink daysave, from Bedford and a Southern daysave for a total of £21.
  • Hello

I want to go to Anglesey Wales on either Friday late afternoon or Saturday morning. I don't need a return as coming back on Sunday with relatives. Going to visit father-in-law whos had a bad stroke.

Train from Wellingborough to Bangor is £54! Coaches are cheaper but an 8hr journey. Have attempted trying to work out the spilt but not doing a very good job!

Would ideally like to go to either bangor or holyhead.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks

Try going from Northampton - you can get there easily by bus.

There's a £28 single on Saturday showing at the moment - though engineering works make it a slow, partly bus, journey.
