Advance Purchase Tickets - only valid on the specific trains that you have booked on

    23/06/07 Leeds dep 0905
    London arr 1132 £17.50

    24/06/07 London dep 1810
    Leeds arr 2041 £24.50

    Total £42.00

Saver Returns - valid on any trains

    Leeds - London £74.70

Split ticket between: Leeds - Barnsley £8.00
Barnsley - London £55.30 (via Chesterfield)

Total £63.30 (Journey time up to 4 hours each way)

The £42 would be ideal. Where would I book this? I've loaded up trainline and it's £50?

It has actually gone down to £25.00 (i.e. £12.50 each way)

Click '2 singles could be cheaper' and you will find the fare under GNER STD ADVANCE 1 at £12.50 each way for these two journeys.

Split at York to give Blackburn - York and York - Newcastle. Cheaper for saver returns, also even greater savings between York and Newcastle by using advance purchase on GNER or value fares on Virgin for that portion of journey.

By 'SPLITTING' does it mean getting off the Glasgow to London train somewhere... wait for another, OR get off and back on the SAME train??

Neither - you STAY on the same train, but have two tickets for the different legs of your journey.

Usually but not always, a trip from Scotland might be cheaper using Megatrain to Manchester for example. Sorry to be pedantic.
  • Any ideas anyone for the cheapest tickets Bath to York leaving mid-afternoon Fri 1st June and leaving York on Sunday 3rd, again mid-afternoon?

Cheapest I can find so far is Bath-Cheltenham, Cheltenham-York (same split-ticket on return leg) gives £11.20 and £43.10 respectively. Total = £54.30, only marginally cheaper than Bath-York price of £55.60....

Thanks for all the tips so far!

  • Anyone want to lend a hand?

I'm needing to get from Leeds to Glasgow, after 11 on the 23rd August, coming back the next day after 12. Basing it on the fares for ever other thursday - friday return trip, I can't get anything lower than £71, but only a year ago I went and it was £38!
