Because megatrain discontinued that route in December when the train operating company changed from Virgin.
  • Travelling from Darlington to Ludlow, you have to change twice, at York and Manchester. The standard return fare was £90 (I'd unfortunately missed the early booking cheap ones), but by booking 3 separate returns, ie D'ton-York, York-Manchester and Manchester-Ludlow, the cost came down to £70.

If you are travelling anyway in the Southern railway network, book anywhere up to 7 days in advance and pick up their daysave ticket, £10 per person and £1 for kids. You can travel anywhere on the Southern network for that price (off-peak) and its unlimited travel for that day.
I took my daughter to London from Portsmouth at the weekend for only £22 (came back the next day so bought 2 daysave tickets), my local station quoted me around £54 for the same trip.

    Day save tickets available here
Well I can't stand by the side

I have spent quite some time trying to get cheap train tickets to Penrith from London.

The cheapest I can get at the moment is £77. I have tried various routes and can get a single to Manchester for £13 on the Friday but I cant get a single back on the Sunday, Monday or Tuesday.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the cost down?

    Many thanks

Which particular dates??? Advance fares may not be released yet. (11 July is the latest 'announced' date for Monday - Friday travel). If you are travelling after that - wait.

And how do you get a £77 fare? It doesn't exist - even a walk on fare is cheaper than that. (£76 to be precise for a saver single)

I want to travel at the end of July (out on 25/7) so with luck I will be able to get a cheaper fare when they get released.

You'd be very unlucky not to, booking soon after release, particularly if you are flexible as to times
  • Hi

I was wondering if anyone could help me!

Im looking to buy 2 return tickets to Cardiff from London leaving on 22/08 and coming back on 24/08 times are flexible!

Ive tried trainline but the cheapest is £124 (or something similar!) and I was hoping to get it a bit cheaper seeing as Im booking 3 months in advance!!

    Any suggestions very much appreciated!

Yes - wait. The 3 months is an utter myth. It's the earliest possible date for booking, rarely achieved in reality.

http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/ - on the front page - gives the latest booking dates. (14 August at the moment). If you book through them you won't pay thetrainline's fee either.
