Coupons refused in Tesco - new policy

In Tesco today I tried to use the Times coupons from yesterday and was (nicely!) refused. I was told it was now policy only to accept coupons if the item had been purchased.

Seems I wasted money on the papers rather than saved by using the coupons as was the intention.

Some stores may not be quite so strict but apparetnly head office had sent written communication to all employees on some regular bulletin.
Proud to be dealing with my debts

If this becomes the Tesco policy I think they will see a drop in profits. A weekly shop costs many pound more at Tescos than Morrisons. Ok the staff are nicer the stores are nicer but at the end of the day if that price gap cannot be bridged by using a reasonable amount of valid vouchers then I for one will have to return to Morrisons. Seems a little petty to me as at the end of the Mr T will simply pass the vouchers back for redemption. I for one hope the op has just been unlucky.

I would just try again on a different day and never use that SA again.
Today I got about £10 off my bill at Tesco using coupons.

    Good Luck next time.

good..their is nothing worse than waiting behind someone who have loads of coupons ,half of which do not scan..then the cashier rolling down the receipt loooking to see if they are on the till roll..I for one thinx it is straightforward /fair/sensible just to use coupons for stuff you are buying{which is always stipulated on the coupon anyway]
  • I have literally just got back from Tesco and got £10.25 off a £13.xx bill, I wonder how long it will take to go through. I think it has always been their '''official''' stance to only take coupons if you have bought the product, because legally, I'm sure they're not supposed to. I think it will still boil down to who serves you and how many they are willing to scan.

went into mine today and they would accept only 1 coupon - her actual words were "we can only accept 1 coupon if you haven't bought the goods".............now was that supposed to mean, 1 for cheese, 1 for meat, 1 for papers etc................as it was, she sorted through mine and took the £2.60 one...bettter than nothing I suppose. Will have to try a young man next time ans see if its the same result......
  • Has anyone else had a similar experience today as OP? I wonder if this is a blanket HO directive to all stores or just to be forwarded on to staff at the store managers discretion?
  • Bound to happen. Other posts reference 8p being paid for £100+ shops.Ultimately a few taking the mickey will spoil it for all
Most people overlook opportunity as it comes dressed in overalls, and looks like hard work.

Use the self scanner. I was told that if u don't buy the product they will accept to 10% of the bill
  • Yesterday, I found myself blowing the self-scanner and I never thought I'd admit to that !!! but not having a biro to push the voucher down the machine was getting to me with it's irritating loud voice so I blew hard and the voucher dropped down. Still I did get some funny looks !!!

Today at 7.30am this morning, I used the 2 quit it vouchers, and a £2.60 magazine voucher and a £1 voucher. The SA said they have been told to accept only one non-purchased product voucher.

So this PM I did 2 seperate transactions bought some nivea shower oil, and some slimfast, and used 1 x £2.60 magazines vouchers on each transaction.

Ironically, I believe the SA would have scanned anything I had handed him. Being a busy working mum with 4 children, 3 kittens and the builders with us for 6 months I cannot usually just pop out to Tescos but today with OH home was able to manage 2 tesco visits.

As before though Tesco will have a clamp down then go back to as before.

Davo - Penarth store has posters on the front saying they are taking Morrisons (bay) vouchers in store - might be worth checking the echo regularly for these apparently they are £3 off £30 shop etc.
