Actually, mahogany wood and a light coloured work top were our own choices when we bought our new build in the early 1990s ! Long since gone for natural oak and granite.“ I was trying to work out why the owners put that strange splashback along the worktops!

The splashback (in the link, not our kitchen!) looks like the stuff you buy on a roll from Lakeland Ltd. I use it to line my pan drawers. Have to think that it may be covering up something hideous.
There was nothing wrong with mahogany cupboards and light worktops in the 90s, and it's easy to paint the wood for an update if the cupboards are still useable!
I think you're right about the drawer liner hiding some other monstrosity, the mind boggles at the possibilities! 😱0 -
