It's the large properties in rural Devon that seem cheap to me (used to Surrey prices). In some places you can get an 8 bedroom detached and land for the price of a 4 bed semi here.0

Conversation at estate agents;
'No, dont worry about internal photos, just get lots of the garden - that's what's going to sell this property'

I've seen a few like this. Either the internal is hideous or for one reason or another they can't get internal access to take photos (ie difficult tenant)0 -

Hostile tenant, probably. Anyway, it worked.0 -

To my mind, the better bits of Devon are those the surfers, sunbathers and yachting fans haven't found in their headlong rush to the beaches.
We're about 40 mins from the M5, but may as well be in Outer Mongolia when it comes to meeting tourists. Here, life goes on much as it always did and prices are reasonable, relative to the seaside locations. It's not insular; about half our village are incomers who took the trouble to find it and liked the slower pace.
It's self selecting; if people can't cope with the distance to shops/work, the crummy roads, horrendous mud in winter and a distinct lack of consumer focus, they soon move on!

First thought "What's that building to the right?". Further thoughts "That building to the right has concrete block walls:(", "The roof is overhanging into our garden", "Hang on a little minute - I think its wall has even been built a bit into our garden".0 -

You're really giving us the hard sell Dave - not:rotfl:0 -

I'd say their ploy worked, wouldn't you?0 -
I was being realistic about the reasons why Surrey is more expensive than very rural areas of England, most of which is about easy access to the capital, well-paid jobs and top quality entertainment.moneyistooshorttomention wrote: »You're really giving us the hard sell Dave - not:rotfl:
But if you want me to plug rurality, the house in the middle of this shot (18th century) comes with 3 good beds and scope for more in the loft, 3 receptions, a large independent annex, outbuildings with conversion potential, about a dozen acres of good land, trout fishing and total seclusion....oh and it's south-facing and not in a frost pocket. Sold on an asking price of £700k. Took a while though...
Dunno realistically what that would be in Surrey, but I suspect a good deal more £!!!0 -
Maybe not quite such a financial benefit - after taking into account frequent "trips back" to see relatives/friends/do shopping (you can tell where my best incomer friends come from:rotfl:). They seem to spend quite a bit "going home" at intervals. Then the grandchildren start getting born - and they spend even more on trips back.
Don't know if that remoter area also gets frequent "getting in another workman to put right what workman no. 1 got wrong" scenarios (tally here so far of new things that wouldnt work by now - 3 bits of house re-decorated again/new flooring swopped again/kitchen tap and outside tap stopped working/doorbell stopped working/shower stopped working/some powerpoints stopped working)..Whew!0
