i take it you do not have children ?

whilst I've seen nicer ones that blend in better, a stair gate is the norm these days where there are toddlers in a house

It does need (a lot of) work - but I don't think it's potentially that bad actually. The thing that would put me off though is the map says there is a bypass nearby (that's a no then...).
