  • Like some other posters I don't think that you have done anything wrong OP. You asked the till op accepted. Maybe get some legal advice if you want but then if you do contact Tescos I would telephone them rather than go in. I think they are asking you to go into the store so they can identify you visually for the future.

Some people on MSE have posted about geting monitered very closely by their local stores...

i still have the receipts. the letter is written on plain paper ie no letterhead and is signed from the checkout manager

does it have his signeture or does it say "checkout manager " basically it would be on headed paper and would have a contact number and poss a reference number if it was legit...was it hand written..? did it give you any contact details ? ..and it would be signed by a specific person for you to contact.... just file it away for a while and forget about it if its real and they cant be bothered to contact you in the proper manor then sod it.... however if you get anymore dodgy looking letters then i would contact the police as it would amount to harrasment.... for now forget about it....

My mum just called Tesco CS on the 0800 number and asked for clarification of voucher acceptance, she was told thath the only other stores coupons they accept are sainsbury's, she was also told that you can definately use a voucher from a magazine say birds eye peas £1.00 off against shopping even if you do not have the product as long as they stock the product in question.
So then we asked if you have say £22.00 total shopping bill and use coupons to value of £20.00, but do not have any of the products will they be accepted, he said they should all be accepted as long as they stock the product, he also said most other major supermarkets have the same conditions just not a great deal of people know about it, he also said that most coupons you get from newspapers, magazines etc say on them accepted in most major retailers or something like that, but anyway long and short of it, Sainsburys money off coupons, and any other product coupons as long as they stock it, and you DO NOT NEED TO BUY PRODUCT. Hope this helps someone.

Oh how some MS'ers would love that in writing!

  • i know this looks as if ive taken the mick with the vouchers but the first time i did my shopping and asked the cashier if he could scan some vouchers and he said yes, he did a pile and then asked if i had anymore, i had a load of the somerfield ones so i gave him some more, he kept going until 4.60 was reached. i was very happy at the time and asked if this was ok, he said yes, so i asked if i did another shop could i use my vouchers again and he said yes so that is what i did, i know i went a bit mad, but now i am panicking, can they make me pay this money back, because i dont have it. i only bought the stuff because id already asked if he would take the vouchers, i wouldnt have bought it otherwise. please can anyone advise. thanks

But you asked after you had put the items in your trolley and reached the checkout so you must have had clear intentions of trying to use all the coupons. We had a similar situation in our store and as a result we are now super strict on the redemption of vouchers which ruins it for everyone.

  • He also told her that if they do not accept them they should call HO and get them to sort it out. He said that as someone else pointed out Tesco get reimbursed no matter wether you buy or not, apparently he also admitted that a lot of staff do not even know the policy and that he has worked there for over 2 years and has only known the policy himself for a few months, go figure!

congrats on your 100th post kellywelly.

tescoemployee, I think the OP only went back cos they'd already been told that the vouchers would be accepted. i might be wrong though!

A friend of mine had a similar experience which turned out to be a hoax counjoured up by family members.

Rickshaw500 - I would suggest before doing anything - phone your partner or the nearest relative or friend that you have who could possibily have had access to your receipts, Tell them that you have had this letter and that you have phoned Tescos and that the "manager - wasnt available" but customers services at head office have informed you that an investigation will be launched to look into this matter as they are worried that an employee firstly would have access to personal details and secondly demanding money "under the tesco's banner" on plain paper looks dubious.

See what sort of reaction you get from the relative!!! You might just find out that it was them and in return you would be giving them back a bit of the grief that you have no doubt been feeling this morning.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on

    best wishes

It's this sort of greed that causes problems. These sort of people always take advantage and screw it up for the rest of us. Get the bill paid and don't be so stupid in future.
It's not the taking part but the winning that counts.

Right, gather up your courage, take a deep breath and phone them now. Don't go in to the store cos then they will know what you look like.

    Ask:
    1. How did you get my address? This is a serious breach of the law governing access to people's private information.
    2. The cashier encouraged you to give the coupons over. Therefore they are in the wrong not you.
    3. Ask them to get HO to confirm in writing that they you must repay Tesco's.

I agree that the Till Manager is trying to cover his backside. If he agrees to send you a letter from HO (which he won't), then threaten to go to the papers with it. The cashier emcouraged you, the till accepted the vouchers, a letter sent on unheaded paper.....this is all very dodgy for Tesco.

Perhaps I should add a point 4 - don't take the p*ss with vouchers!! The self scan tills usually need authoristion for more than 30% vouchers - so I generally aim for 25%. Don't spoil it for everyone else!

Good luck and please let us know how you get on.
