Hi there Rickshaw. You are now my unofficial Tesco bashing heroine:T . I'm not an expert in this type of thing but I would be amazed if the person who sent you this letter is authorised to correspond directly with customers, let alone access your contact details.
I would suggest an anonymous call to the tesco helpline. Ask them all of the previously recommended questions, i.e.
Is the writer authorised to contact you directly,
How did they obtain your details,
In what way have you acted fraudulently, etc.
Don't give any details about locations, amounts concerned, etc. Just get a feel for whether this type of approach is normal. Also, do not make yourself known in store until you have some answers.
The letter states that they have a responsibility to report all transactions of this nature to head office, so why did the letter not come from them?
I don't think it can be a prank as the level of detail (times and amounts of transactions) would mean that someone would have gone to alot of trouble just to wind you up.
This means that it has probably come from a panicking low level manager who is attempting to cover herself by bullying you into coming forward to make good their shortfall.
As previously stated - you have done nothing wrong. The cashier has clearly not received appropriate training or was possibly fed up at having to work and thought he would get his or her own back on Tesco. This in no way reflects badly on you. Keep your chin up and let us know how you get on.0 -

well put mate its a low level manager who realises they are in trouble
and want to make you pay back money you do not have to rather than take the fall themselves, they get enough on bonuses and other rubbish so don't feel bad for whatever manager it is who has obtained your details without permission!

Sorry I've only skim read this thread... have you tried anonymously ringing the store (1471 before the number) and asking to speak with whatever the managers name is on the letter (Rees was it?), just to see if that person exists to start with. If they do, you can hang up as they go to get them, and if they dont, shred the letter and tuck into your free Tesco grub

The fact you did 2 shops within 26mins, to the same cashier , looks like collusion.
Go to the store and the same sort of time/day of the week, see if they are on a checkout or not.Chances are they wont be.
It may well have been there last day working for tesco, and could'nt give a toss , hence why they did so many.
I am surprised no one else got involved, with such a large amount it must have taken a while to scan them in, and other people in the queue would surely have said something, and the cashier next to them overheard , and looked at what was going on.
As for tesco being greedy like others have said, that makes me laugh.
an corner shop charges twice as much for the same item , and they arnt greedy?
Tesco are ruthless, 15 years working for them taught me that....greedy?no more than all the other supermarkets0
