I wouldn't be without Popeye and moo the cats, we all broke out hearts when Jack (the dog) was put to sleep in the summer, because he was ill, not for any other reason.
We have had a small tabby cat come in the garden and in the house for food the last few days, today she turned up with a cone on her head where she had been neutered, this time she brought her brother and sister with her lol, Popeye was not amused when they all just walked in the kitchen and started eating her food lol.Boiler pot £30.92/£10000 -

My dear Happy, the advice on this boards can be extreme sometimes - but then many people are rather extreme and believe seriously that this is the way to go forward. I never posted a SOA for the following reasons:
1) I find that it is not very useful as a tool (too static) and not specific enough to help me make decisions.
2) It asks to say how many adults there are in the household - who is to say who is an adult and who is not. I am a grown up but an adult? Oh my!
3) I refuse to have people tell me to give up my expensive haircut - the balancing act of budgetting is my own decision. My haircut is what gets me earning - I cannot present to Prime Ministers (no kidding, have done that but it was a smaller coutry PM) having cut my hair myself. Apart from everything I will feel like !!!!!
What I am saying is - don't upset yourself. Any decision about money is not about money at all: it is about your life. And it is your life - just need to create the different kind of balances that bring about financial and life health.
If you want some support doing this one go on the other side and post for help - I doubt anyone will advise you to give away your pets.
This reminds me, have you seen 'On the road' - a very upsetting movie about an apocalyptic even where people have run out of everything (no food, no vegitation no nothing). At the end the boy whose dad died knew he can trust a family because they had their dog with them - they had not eaten it!

Good post there by FW. There are many judgemental posters on Mse, thankfully we have a very open-minded group here on the Matrix - give your furry friends a huge hug Happytogetdebtfree and best foot forward.
I have just returned from town and had to share - was in the bookshop and there on prominent display was a copy of The Secret and.... right next to The Secret was another book called.... wait for it.... The Matrix - I kid you not :rotfl:0 -

Hello Matrix, and welcome to the new bods. As MG says we are all a little nuts but we try and help in any way we can!
This talk of pets ties in with something I have done today. I took some cat food to our local cats home. I was there last week and the fellow who runs it was telling me that they have 45 cats and kittens in there and more are being left with them each day. I met a couple of the "inmates" including a gorgeous black boy called Phantom. I wanted to take him home there and then, but hardly have space for my current 3. Anyway... when I went shopping this week, I got an extra box of cat food and more cat meat pouches and left it at the shelter. They need all the help I can get.
I have told my hubby that if we are ever in the predicament that we have to choose between feeding ourselves or feeding the kittens, the kittens take priority. Simples.
Thrifty... that sure is the Universe saying something isn't it?!
Okay ladies... I have a pumpkin to carve, a vegetable soup to make and a bowl of trick or treating sweets to set out in preparation for tomorrow night!I will be at choir, but hubby will be at home and have to cope all by himself. Oh, and I am trying to persuade my three lovely beasties that I am not being utterly cruel... but the clocks went back and they are not getting fed earlier than normal, regardless of what their tummy is saying!! This is not going to be fun!!
I will try and check in tomorrow, but seeing as work has turned into Stalag Luft 13 recently, I doubt it will be possible. Have an excellent week one and all, and positive vibes to one and all."A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort"Herm Albright 1876-19440 -

But if it was a case of your children eating beans on toast what would your decision be then?
Some large dogs cost £10-£15 a week to feed, let alone vets bills, and I think it is a valid point to raise tbh. That £60 a month could be the difference between keeping a home or not. If things were that bad I would consider it - but TV etc would go first, as would all luxuries, new clothes, most things really.
When I was really hard up I went through my SOA with a fine toothcomb (in those pre-mse days it was just a list on a bit of paper ). For each heading I said 'Can I afford it? Do I want to afford it? Can I do without it? Can I do it cheaper? If I gave it up how much would I save to use elsewhere? What else can I give up to save this?' I did have the dog on the list, and when I prioritised she came below the kids and above the TV and alcohol. I did downgrade her food though, and I don't think she ever forgave me.
I do think in extreme cases of hardship nothing is sacred, apart from children. The dog would have gone if I couldn't afford to feed/clothe them or keep them warm, but the dog came above expensive Xmas presents for them.
I miss my doggyA positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

I agree Gally - kids are different, and if that was the choice, then it's a no-brainer (unfortunately)0
