OOh Horace, I missed Gok so I'll iplayer that later. Did watch Mary Portas, VERY inspirational and she's right about clothes for ladies over 40. There are some truly awful things out there and I'm seriously hoping that I dont EVER end up wearing any of them! I do see women every day at work and think 'I bet you're younger than me but that is doing NOTHING for you'. Not being a judgey pants, just that I like to see women looking and feeling fab and I DO believe they are linked. I have felt rubbish mentally lately but NEVER rubbish enough not to do full make up and a frock for work/out. The girls would think I'd lost the plot if they saw me sans lippie!

PMSL - touche FW - but I am deadly serious - mind you the euro might be worth zip by then so we may all be ....but meanwhile ..........

Just measured all the bits I need to do my sofa and OMG it is going to be squeaky squeaky on the fabric.

Time to take a deep breath and plunge in I think.

How about doing knitted/crocheted (sp?) arm rests to save fabric?

Marru - I have a stack (32 plates) of unused paper plates suitable for a 7 year old girly party, you are welcome to have them.

Thank you, I might take you on for that. Party is not until end of the month.

And thank you everyone for your replies. Most inspiring. I actually feel that with proper planning I can actually pull it off. Bitsyyyyyyy can I have a cakeeeeee? Pretty pleaseeeee...... (And if you want to advertise amongst the mums for further cake makings then please feel free ;)). DD wants a Scooby Doo party so I will hit the P0undland and see if I can find anything from there to go with the theme.

    Anyhoo, must get on...

(although I know that 16 year olds are not allowed to work 36hr weeks).
since when did this come in? Many 16 year olds leave school to start work, if the government are not allowing it I would suggest that is wrong. Not every 16 year old is academic and the only way for them to progress is to work full time.
Sorry but I think this is another one of those situations where all young people are put into a certain category and stifled.

edit, I was so incensed by this that I checked it out on the government website. 16 year olds are allowed to work 36 hours.
    15 and 16 year olds
If you're 15 or 16 and are working while you're still at school, your rights are almost identical to those of 14 year olds. However, you are allowed to work for up to eight hours on Saturdays or during the school holidays.
    16 and 17 year olds
If you're no longer at school and you're 16 or 17, the law refers to you as a 'young worker'. Because you will no longer be at school, there are fewer restrictions on when you can work and for how long, but there are still some rules.
Because you've reached school leaving age, you may find that employers may be more willing to offer you part-time or full-time employment. You're also not limited to just 'light work', so you'll be allowed to work in places like a busy shop, restaurant kitchen or as a waiter or waitress.

MrsMoo - I didnt know that about kids and 36hrs, I was going on what I was told by someone who employs kids. Mind you when I was at school I probably worked more than that especially as I was saving for a return ticket to Israel and all my spends for 6 weeks which I managed to do by having two paper rounds, 2 saturday jobs and 2 sunday jobs (plus the paper rounds on those days too)..not bad for a 16 year old heading off to work on a kibbutz:D..those were the days.

Tea tonight was very moneysaving - oven chips with eggs and peas - oven chips 99p for 2kg in Aldi, eggs bought with coupons yesterday (free), peas have been in freezer for months. I stewed some apple with the blackberries - was a bit crafty with the apple, I used my apple corer segmenter thing and then bunged them in a saucepan peel and all - as they cooked the skins fell off saving me on peeling so I just fished them out. Alas the gloop is quite wet as I put too much water in:( I served some gloop with a rice pudding bought yesterday - it was rather yummy and looked quite posh.

I had thought about picking up my tapestry again but even though I have a magnifier, I find it a terrible strain on the eyes these days..I have been trying to sew a bell pull for yonks now and I have a free picture that came with it to sew as well.

Must try harder...I had to sew a button on something the other day and used the sewing kit that I acquired when I stayed in London at that hotel - not a bad kit all in all with buttons and safety pins and several needles that had been pre-threaded with all colours of cotton.:D

Just love Mary Portas - those clothes in house of fraser were horrendous. Must admit that I like Selfridges and have been a regular in the Fenn Wright & Manson section - I had a faulty skirt where the crystals popped off when I sat down, that skirt was exchanged for 3 dresses although I did have to contribute some money because I didnt quite have enough. I have one dress that is a party dress but I have worn it for afternoon meets and I feel like a million dollars in it. I have other dresses and skirts that I wear from time to time too. Time to get the plain black jersey dress washed (feel sure it doesnt need dry cleaning) and then I can wear it during the winter and dress it up with a deep yet bright purple jacket that was a sale item..£25 instead of £250:eek: I don't want to dress like a teen nor do I want to dress like my mum.

BTW - Gok has designed a range of clothes for Sainsburys too - they look ace, I saw a preview on Twitter.

Easy peasey then - serve up empty plates and tell the kids Scooby Doo had the party food as a Scooby Snack :D

    Hi guys,

Crickett: glad to see you so positive generally despite the odd hiccup.
Claire: stop hiding behind the sofa. And was it MGs sofa?

Late night at work tonight. Tidying up a go-go and just doing things I haven't been able to do on other nights when I have been out.

I'm starting a petition to God for more hours in the day. Who is with me? ;)

Sad thing is Marru people dont want to pay what it costs to make the cakes. Whilst it's something I'd love to try I don't have anynidea how anyone makes a living from it. The Sleeping beauty cake that I made for DDs birthday cost £25 in ingredients alone!! That doesn't even factor the cost of labour to make it.

I don't want to promise I can make you one but I will have a look online and check out some designs. but I can't promise but will make a decision ASAP for you xxx

Bitsy - if you use decent ingredients sadly it is expensive, which is why when I make cakes for friends and I'm not charging either a. It is the present or b. I give them a list of what I need to make it and they have to supply it. Luckily i'm pretty quick at the simple stuff now and refuse to do anything complicated to someone else's deadline! If you want to do it as a business though, you need to start doing some research. I know the place I do my classes run a one-day course on how to run a cake-making business from home.

Been up early watching Cameron's speech - boy oh boy does he need a dose of the Matrix!!

Despite the "R" word we are keeping on keeping on working towards our fabulous lives..... and if we are indeed heading towards a double dip recession we are the people who are going to thrive and dare I say it even come out stronger. Remember "Together we can do anything"

Did you see FW's post yesterday BTW??? You know how sometimes she poses a question that makes your heart thump and your heart soar? Well here is a classic:

    http://www.themoneyprinciple.co.uk/2011/money-principle-ideas-generator-economic-meltdown-and-what-would-you-do/

So knowing what we know about living in the real world, with real families and with real financial challenges - what would your three things be???

Probably shouldn't say this but if you look at the bottom of the post there is a little incentive for us to chip in - LOL. So I am off to have a coffee, a ponder and a post in response.

Then - some more sofa magic.
