  • Green bee, how long are you going for? This sound really a lot of luggage. We should account for differences here though. First, I have been really trying to Tavel light; and two one advantage of being an academic is that one can wear almost anything and doesn't really have to change for dinner.

This is how I am off for a week with a 8 kilo bag including my computer.

    I'm off for a week... 4 days client-facing:

1 jacket, 2 dresses, 1 skirt, 1 pair of trousers, 3 tops and 1 cardigan plus socks and LOTS of tights in case of disasters. I pair of flat shoes for getting between rooms and one pair of killer heels for on stage. One pair of medium heels to wear with trousers. Jewellery to go with all outfits... TBH for 4 days I'd rather take 2 jackets, but I'm hoping I can get away without one on at least one day!

Evenings ... One client dinner, one team dinner, two evenings to ourselves (although we are meeting colleagues in the bar late on Monday) so three dresses, one pair of shoes (work shoes will be OK for the client meeting), one wrap, one cardigan.

Daytime ... Something to wear when we arrive that will also do for eating out (linen trousers and shirt), something to wear on Tuesday morning (free time) when the sun shines (shorts & t-shirt).

Swimming stuff, underwear, spare t-shirt and something clean for the flight home (jersey dress).

Ooh... Now I know it will be hot on Tuesday I don't need to take my heavy hemp wrap cardigan... Or should I take it instead of the long one I was going to wear on the plane (which is light and warm but synthetic).

Oh... And laptop, iPad, various chargers and adapters, handbag(s), toiletries, make-up, hairbrush etc... And medication (which takes up a shocking amount of space!).

Just need to decide what to wear on the flight out (I always feel revolting when I arrive, so I won't wear it again, not even on the flight home). Something that looks good with NHS green support stockings would be perfect :p

If it wasn't work, it would be one pair of jeans, one pair of shorts, one skirt, two pairs of shoes (one worn on the plane), swimming stuff and half a dozen tops (I like to have spares in case I feel like a change).

FW, that comment about being an able to wear what you like as an academic made me laugh! You're right of course but hilarious that you admit it. (I dont mean that to be offensive btw, just tickled me)

GB I have never mastered the art of packing light even after all my travelling. I tend to fly in linen trousers, a vest top and a cardi in case the flight is cold. I'll be on the road a bit again with the new job (positive thinking needed today) and will be travelling up and down for about a month. I have got lots of travel toiletries but that is a big part of it for me. NO CHANCE of me going anywhere without all my make up! If I get to go into uniform straight away then that will help a bit. I do love a jersey dress for things like this.

Candle lit today ladies in remebrance. Grim weather and feeling a bit bleurgh. Should I formulate a plan B in case all this falls through jobwise or would this tell the universe that I dont want it enough. Sorry to bang on, I know others are dealing with much worse. I just hate feeling out of control and my job is important to me as I am financially on my own. Also hate felling in limbo and feel I should be seeing people/doing more in case I end up moving cities but I cant as Im bored telling them the same thing/dont want to take too much out of savings in case I end up on the dole!!!! Rant over X

Lots of positive vibes for the job. Keep believing in it.

And if you're going to be down this way at all you can come and help me declutter my wardrobe and advise me on what I do need... I had it done about 8 years ago and it was a revelation, but in needs doing again. I have a colleague near NY who could do with some help too, if you're ever over that way!

Avocado whizzed up with cucumber soup and garlic is delicious, even with ground linseed in it! It will be followed with pasta and chopped tomatoes, herbs and garlic.

Hopefully I'll feel up to making some kind of pepper risotto tonight as that will deal with most of what needs using, and the leftovers will freeze.

Kitchen surfaces have been cleaned. Need to get the Hoover out after lunch...

Re 9/11, I was deeply moved during today's Andrew Marr show, to listen to the surviving head, Howard Lutnick, of Cantor Fitzgerald, the company which lost two-thirds of its staff when the Twin Towers were hit, (658 people, including Howard's brother). He said that he knew immediately in its aftermath that his and his surviving colleagues' purpose was to keep the company going and to support the families of his deceased staff, and that was agreed that very evening by the remaining staff ($200million given in support to the families to date). Their clients and customers kept the faith, and they also had help from so-called rival businesses. Cantor Fitzgerald and their families have an annual charity day on 9/12. The power of purpose to inspire and motivate....

I saw that too GQ and like you was very moved as well as overwhelmed with the thought of all that loss. I'd have liked to hear more from him and wonder how his health is/will be affected by all the toxic dust in the aftermath. A very dignified and inspirational man

That sounds like more than enough - they can make their own lunch boxes and look after you for a change. You need to rest and get well - it takes time, flapjacks can wait. All said in a stern voice, rant over and relax......

Glad to hear they are helping - well DH anyway, you need to chill and let the boys get on with it and you get well [even knowing they won't do things your way and there will be MUCH more mess made than if you did it yourself ;)] Take care x

Souk, no offence taken. Sociologists and statisticians are particularly bad. Whenever I take OH with me to a conference we play 'spot the...' and never fail. It is also the aura of being slightly lost and 'out of it'.

I can admit it! I, myself, am an example of simple elegance and timeless fashion - the ones who have met me can attest to it. I just don't like changing for dinner, this is all.
