I wont be using it to ring anyone in the US just to text my daughter at home to make sure she's ok.

I think you need a tri or quad-band phone as previously mentioned - not just to call within the US, but for your phone to work when you are in the US - so even to send text messages.

I agree that internet usage can get expensive but obviously you have an important reason to need it. One other thing to consider is that some hotels have internet access in the room for a fee even if you don't have a laptop - you can use a keyboard they provide and the TV in your room...it's not brilliant and it may be a bit expensive, but you may find it to be more convenient than visiting the business centre.

If you do use the one in Hawaiian Marketplace check to see if you can buy a block of time and use it a bit each day rather than pay each day as you go...some places allow you to do that, others don't.

The other thing to consider is that it may be OK timewise to call your daughter using a calling card and a pay phone...since you will be 8 hours behind her it would probably be in the middle of your day when you call. If you want to go this route go to the CVS or Walgreens on the Strip to buy a calling card as they are much better value than those sold in the hotels (like 10x the value from what I've found). A bit of a pain to use a pay phone but the hotel phone charges are crazy.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Daughter is taking her laptop so we should be ok for internet access without having to pay huge fees
My phone is triband so I should be ok there as well....used it loads abroad before just not in the US
    :hello: LORRAINE :hello:
  • Hi All,
I am going to Vegas for 1 week in November, all booked up staying at The Luxor. What I am now trying to do is book some show tickets. I really want to see LOVE and The Hans Klok magic show (The one with Pammy!) but am up for seeing anything else if you have any recommendations?
I have looked on ticketmaster but hoped that someone may know of a cheaper way?
    Many Thanks!

Lorraine there are very few free wi-fi connection sites in Vegas and the hotels charge about $12 per 24 hours to plug your laptop in.

as ferf and I have said the phonecards are good value for phoneing home and there are loads of payphones in all hotels.

I'll second that, my work often takes me to the states and the phonecards are top notch value.

your idea of very few must be different to mine. :-) Here's a list of places I used my laptop to get free wi-fi last trip:

    Fashion Mall
    Conference Centre
    Hilton Hotel
    Excaliber Hotel
    Treasure Island/Mirage
    Planet Hollywood

so basically from one end of the strip to the other there's somewhere to get online for free.
Places like the Conference Centre and the Hilton even provide you with free power sockets! THen again Hilton wasn't really free as I thought I better spend a whole 2 dollars on a coffee while I was there (in fact I think all the hotels listed were at the coffee shops in the hotel - can't remember if they were all the same chain). Fashion mall, seats conveniently positioned outside the Apple store, conference centre is designed free and has a really nice area if you have your own computer, decent supervised area if you use theirs. Some hotels have free wi-fi built into their room price (Signature for example) and of course there is the airport and surrounding facilities such as the car hire buildings.

I was going on what I had read on Lasvegastalk.com, Looks like there is more than I thought. Having said that depending on where you are staying it looks like it could be a good walk from your room to get free access
  • orleans hotel double rooms available for $35 per night through to mid November We stayed there last year nice hotel not on the strip but hotel puts on free courtesy bus.

For Love definitely book direct with the Mirage, either on their website or by calling up. Their prices now include LET (Light Entertainment Tax). I knew the seats I wanted so called the Box Office direct.

If you dial 0844 861 2121 before the 001, it will only cost 1p/min to call.

Don't know about Hans Klok, but I would think booking direct with the hotel would be the cheapest way.

I hate dealing with Ticketmaster and their extortionate fees. We had to book through them to see Elton John and it costs $54 in fees and taxes. We might see him again next trip, but I'm going to wait till we get there and go to the Box Office to save on the fees.
