We fell in love with the place and thought about you all and your tips when we were there. We will definately go back at some point and I just wanted to thank you all, especially Ferf223, Photome and Trets for the excellent advice and information that we found on this forum.

There are times when hotels are more expensive, during holidays, large conventions, major sporting events etc and every weekend.

There are sites that list convention dates but to be honest I never check, I get the flight and then hope i can get a deal about 3 months before I go.

I usually can and dont mind paying up to $100 for a mid strip hotel during the week, but more at weekends.

Late dec and early jan are usually cheap times, but I usuall go easter time and have always managed to find a good deal.

What is your budget? where do you want to stay? and do you want it cold (ish) warm or very hot..weather wise.?

I still cannot believe that there are people who hate Vegas...I can see how some may not want to go back over and over like most of us, sure...but hate it? I'm always baffled when people tell me that they hated their trip. Are they completely mad?! :) I have found in a lot of cases it's that they didn't really know what to expect and were disappointed...I can give a great example here of why a friend of a friend hated Vegas, but it's not very nice and I'm afraid I'll offend someone by posting it (frankly, I find it offensive myself)...but in any event, I think that some people are expecting things like the $2.99 prime rib buffets of years gone by and things like that as there are some people who haven't been in 20 years and think it's still the same - so they tell their friends all about their really outdated trip...and then their friends expect that.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Summer is pretty cheap generally as it's so hot - it's not an ideal time for many people to go...if you can go before UK summer holidays start and therefore before the flight prices jump, you may find some good deals on hotels.

Excalibur will be less expensive than Luxor pretty much any day...mid-strip, consider Imperial Palace and closer to the date check the hot deals for Flamingo, Harrahs and Bally's as you can get some decent rates.

I do check the convention calendar as the last thing I want is to arrive when 100,000 conventioneers do...that can have a massive impact on hotel prices...so I will normally look at a few hotels for rates the dates I would like to go before I book my flight...if I'm happy with the rates I see as a worst case scenario if nothing better comes along, I'll book the flights and then stalk hotels later.

Something to consider looking at is this link which has been posted before:

    http://www.vegashotelspecial.com/

Pick a few hotels that interest you, and then scroll back through the offers that were available the last couple of years...you'll get an idea the periods they have specials and when they may appear for next year...it's not bullet proof, but it's somethign to work from if you're an obsessive rearcher (like me).
