Ferf, we stayed at the GC South Rim in May at the El Tovar Hotel. It’s not the cheapest but you are literally a few yards from the Canyon Rim and it’s a 100 year old historic hotel, the location really couldn’t be better (and the restaurant was very good).
There’s also the Kachina, Thunderbird and Bright Angel Lodges which are right on the Rim next to the hotel above. You can book them all directly at www.xanterra.com. Also, if you vist the National Parks website you can download a PDF map of the South Rim village.
If you want any more info, just PM me. I’d be more than happy to help as I got most of my LV info from this thread.
Thanks for this - as we will only be staying one night I do think we would prefer to be right by the rim so this is a great bit of advice. I will bookmark that site and look into it in more detail later...really appreciate the input!
Photome and alictait - thanks to both as well, I hadn't realised it was so long ago for you photome, and alictait appreciate the heads up as knowing where NOT to stay is as valuable as knowing what places are recommended. Thanks!Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
Is it possible to get a pretty reasonable priced motel in Las Vegas - single person for a week. No specific budget - just cheaper than the hotels I have seen discussed in the pages I have looked at so far.
Would take too long to read all the posts.
Thanks.0 -

You dont say which week or what reasonable is.
Super 8 is a budget motel, I am guessing less than $50 a night.
But Circus Circus is often available for less, I have stayed there for less than $40 a night.
Terribles is another hotel that is often available for about $40 a night
and if you go downtown there are often rates for less

I agree that the specific week (if there is one) can make an enormous difference...and knowing what is "reasonable" would help - not sure what the OP has seen on the pages looked at (if Wynn, Bellagio and The Hotel then obviously not standard rooms or rates).
Stratosphere, Sahara and Riviera are usually pretty inexpensive...have seen Orleans for $25/night before (not often, but still)...Hooters can be quite cheap too.
I stayed at that Super 8 in 1997. Then it was OK for what it was and what I needed at the time...not a clue what it's like now.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
Thanks for the replies.
Are there times of the year when flights are cheaper?0 -
Thanks for the replies.

I think there are times of the year when flights are cheaper (less busy periods) but there are definitely times when hotels in vegas are cheaper depending on conventions and sporting events etc and of course weekends (fri and sat) are always a lot more than weekdays.0 -
Never had a problem taking a child in to the conservatory and while you are there make sure you go round the corner to see the worlds largest chocolate fountain.
Hello everyone,
Saw Photome's post and just had to comment - you REALLY need to see the chocolate fountain - its amazing for all kids and big kids like myself. I would also HIGHLY recommend having one of the chocolate crepes from the adjoining shop - delicious!!!! Im already looking forward to my next one - hopefully next year...
Secondly - In reply to doodle-bugs post about gaming - Im not a huge gambler (I play a bit of poker and I dont consider tournament poker as gambling-though people do disagree with me!!) BUT there is no mention of anyone trying Craps whilst over there. I played for the first time on my last Vegas trip in July this year and its AMAZING!!! Ive never made so much money and Im a small stake person! It can be quite intimidating at first but persevere. I read up on how to play, watched a silly tv show on it and then watched for real in the Golden Nugget. Their stakes are pretty low - $5 minimum so I gave it a go after the dealer insisted that I would win!!!! And I most certainly did. The guy next to me was betting $500 for each of my $5 and he was loaded by the end of the hour or so. I went away happy and hooked - luckily they dont have craps here (or in Ireland - that Im aware of....) Anyway - give it a go - in my opinion it beats pressing a button on a slot machine - just keep your stakes low for maximum enjoyment :T
Enjoy

My son had a crepe with raspberrys on and we both had an ice cream from the shop and then sat overlooking the bellagio pool, very nice way to spend some time.
I have always fancied craps but have always felt a little (a lot) intimidated, maybe I should try it in march next year. I always play roullette0 -
the tables are always so popular in the big casinos that it can be hard to even watch, i find. it,s definatly the hardest of all the table games ect from what i have read.

there various freebies and Comps with each :beer:Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:0 -

this is the common misconception - it really isnt that hard. If I can do it anyone can. Granted, Im not totally up on ALL of the bets, but the basic ones are easily mastered within an hour or so. The first time you shake those two red dice is amazing! (especially if you dont throw a seven - craps - after the point has been made!)
The reason why the tables are so popular is cos the Americans know that its a great game and factually speaking the house has the lowest odds in its favour of ANY OTHER game - so its the best one to play. If anyone is interested I will write up the BASIC rules and post here - wont bother if its not valuable to anyone...
Photome - I love roulette - its my favourite table game BUT I always lose in the long run as I have favourite number (doh!) and the double zero over there means that the wheel is different to here so I dont tend to play over there - Black 29 does it for me :rotfl: Whats yours?......:hello:My name is Steff and I am a Vegas Addict :j0
