I went with virgin on the basis of free activation and 30 days notice, i was then going to migrate to metronet with whom i had been with at my old address.

No such luck, I have been connected on Data stream which means you cannot migrate to metronet and most ISP s.

So now i am wondering if it is just pot luck whether you get connected on data stream or IP stream ???

I was going to sign up with Virgin , then migrate. Where can I find out more info about this? Does it mean you're stuck with Virgin?
    Any help much appreciated.
Been trying to do my own research, but I can find nothing to suggest that you can't migrate with data stream. Hope there's someone out there who knows about this stuff

Re. Virgin and data stream........... I posed that very same question in an earlier post, but didn't have any replies :-/ As you say this is very important to know as the whole idea of signing up with Virgin was the 1 months notice, if your weren't satisfied with the service, and migrating to another isp. If they NOW have made this impossible, we need to know.
I do hope we get a reply soon, as I was going to sign up this week.

ISP's using Datastream connections (Tiscali, Bulldog etc) are the ones that are being complained about most on many ADSL forums. This is because BT, under OFCOM rulings, had to open their exchanges up for the sake of competition. Since they had to do this, it now allows ISP's to install there own equipment in the exchange. This is the key to Datastream services.

A Datastream provider can install a 2Mbit circuit into a telephone exchange, but this immediatly causes contention issues, as the capacity to run thousands of connections is not specifically there from the offset.

The main issue currently facing Datastream broadband providers is the speed that users can access the Internet and email services. Because the ISP routes traffic through its own network, the more users on board directly affects the speed in which users can use the Internet. The busier a telephone exchange, the worse the connection speed becomes.

IPStream Broadband Providers (BT, Proweb etc) channel all customers down a 155Mbit network circuit. This is fed directly onto a BT controlled network, which gives us a balanced speed. The number of users connected to the exchange does not affect the connection speeds, as it is a completely balanced network, regulated by OFCOM

as they are different systems you can not migrate.

Was also thinking this week about the Virgin offer of free connection, then cancel after one month to switch to
Metronet. Decided against it to save any future headaches.
Signed up with Metronet today deciding to pay the connection charge. Was on NTL dialup before.
Sent my cancellation with NTL off two weeks back.
Metronet seems to have a cap. But in reality it is only what you pay that is capped to a max.
So after you reach the max download limit. There is no extra
    charge for further downloads.
I opted for the PAYASUGO 1Mbp.. So I am charged less if I do not download the maximum per month.
PAYASUGO also has a cap as to what you pay.
If anyone is interested. After much research. I have opted to buy a Netgear modem/router.
  • I am in need of help!

Exchange recently updated so can now get Broadband. Was going to go with Virgin and then migrate but am I right in thinking this is not so easy now, due to Datastream connection?

Also, I have no idea what equipment to buy. I know that most ISPs provide it for a cost, but I don't know if this is good value or worth having?

I want as secure a connection as possible. I won't be downloading music etc, just need to be able to email and browse internet.

I bought the Dell PC offer back at the end of October and the invoice tells me I have a V.92 Data Fax Modem UK. I assume I still need soemthing else?

Any advice extremely welcome - there are quite a few experts here!
  • Thanks Mike for tht info.
Another question- my friends signed up with Virgin but have since moved and now have cable so don't need the modem. Are they all the same and could I use this one for a connection to e7even?

    Lellabelle

    Yes that would work fine.

Not sure what your telephone cable thing is, but it might work - you will need to try it I think.

If you email e7even support - it is free - and it is alos very very good - They have got back to me within a couple of minutes before !

Basic adsl modems do not generally need much work to setup - most work out of the box.

You might want to consider wireless if you like to connect from all around your house - it is getting much cheaper now.

    Regards
    Mike

P.S. if anyone joins e7even using my referral code in the referral board - 702884 , I'll split the £20 fee with you
