That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • Hi guys, Was going to buy a refurb (allbeit with 1 year guarantee) fro ELECTROTEC (30 min drive from me-reviews seem spot on) full HD Tv. Original budget £330. What attracted me to the TOSHIBA refurbs was the 'resolution plus' -which upscales standard definition DVD/TV signals. 1 year guarantee-7 day no quibble money back-extra years warrenty at £30.

    37 inch (50hz)-£280-http://www.electrical-deals.co.uk/toshiba-37rv753-regza-37-inch-full-hd-lcd-tv-freeview-hd.html

    42 inch (50hz)-£330- http://www.electrical-deals.co.uk/toshiba-regza-42av635-42-full-hd-lcd-with-freeview.html .

However...having taken the advice of you guys & some other experts...found these...(both available-need to call as may be missing stand, etc) at RICHER SOUNDS (guarantee for 5 years only 10% of price)

    37 inch sharp-100hz resolution -£350 -http://www.richersounds.com/product/lcd-tv/sharp/aquos-lc37le320/shar-lc37le320

42 inch LG with freeview HD (the freeview HD not that important as have Virgin Media)-£350 (50hz) http://www.richersounds.com/product/lcd-tv/lg/42ld490/lg-42ld490

Now...with guarantee for 5 years will take it a bit over budget....PLEASE PLEASE some advice as this is sending me nuts (!).

Our living room is darkish-viewing between 7 foot away & 11 1/2 foot away...we watch normal tv-not much sport-sometimes an action film.

PLEASE can some nice person who knows about refurbs, HD etc advise-my head is gonna explode! Thanks again..!
  • Cant advise on which tv to buy but i would say the following.

Do you want a 37" or a 42". When i chose a a couple of years ago i cut out a piece of card to show how big it was. Doing that i could see our front room could not handle any tv any bigger than 42" without being ridiculous.

The second point id make is you set a budget for a reason so stick to it. You can always pay a little bit more to get a supposedly better tv but there was a reason you had a budget in the first place.

Now you just have to wait for someone to advise you on the tv's.

It's between the 42 Tosh and LG then.
I can't tell you what to buy, that's up to you. Listen to the speakers in each TV, if you've no intention of upgrading the sound, they could sound awful. Compare number of HDMI ports, and of course the picture.
Did you say you're near to electrical deals? Their postage is £45.
Tosh has 4x HDMI, LG has 3. To my eye the LG looks nicer, with a smaller surround, especially at the bottom. The Tosh will let you view photos or listen to mp3s (yuk) through the TV. LG only has 1 SCART, but you shouldn't really be connecting stuff by SCART now, even less so in the future. The LG appears to have network connectivity though, so if you can connect it to your router like a computer you can watch iPlayer etc. on it.
For me, subject to seeing the picture and hearing the sound, I'd buy the LG for £350 from Richer, don't bother paying extra for the warranty.
  • Hello all,

Well....finally purchashed a refurb (I know I know!) 42 inch toshiba fullhd sl738b. 100hz-pic by far best in showroom (richer sounds could not even be bothered to phone back re: missing bit of stand/or to check stock).

Well pleased at 1st-FAB picture. Linked it up with my Virgin hd box (TIVO box with more moemory upstairs for mo). Used HDMI supplied by virgin. 1 standard dvd player to scart 1 & ps2 to scart 2.

Ok....sporadically it 'cuts out' & says 'please re-tune' so have to go to hdm1 setting (remote-top button lets you go to all hdmi ports to select which one you want). VERY ANNOYING if watching something -however you can allways re-wind. Is there something I'm doing wrong????! Dodgy HDMI leads??? Set up properly on v+ box-followed instructions.

I'm SO annoyed as spent a bit over budget & its a 40 min drive there. I can get a FULL refund witin 7 days-but the pic is SO good. Is there anything I can do to cure this? Is it the TV or the virgin box?

God-wish I'd stuck with my old tv (!). Please help & no 'I told you so's' about refurbs (!).mad.gif

i bet its the HDMI lead ,or TIVO box(the 500GB ones are not very good ,thats what my step son says who works for virgin ,thier always going wrong )
do's tv work fine on every thing else
there or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff

  • Banger...Using our old (Samsung?) v+hd box (all set up correctly). TIVO is upstairs (we don't record much HD stuff).

read somewhere might need to 'power-down' & re-boot box-is that right? Also someoneelse on another forum thinks it might be the in-built freeview tuner. We did the initial 'scan' & no analogue/digital signals received (no aerial plugged in). To get digital we need remote to got to HDMI1 setting-that's the digi HD signal. We did the initial tune with V box in standby as manual said.

HDMI lead supplied by Virgin. Worth getting another?

The problem seems to be intermittent-it was fine earlier on for 5 hours! So don't want to take tv back as pic is fab!

    So good I posted twice.

Sell televisions for a living and we have these for a whole lot more than Amazon are selling them for. Grab it whilst it is hot!
  • Have you been into the display settings on the virgin box:
    Home, 7 - Settings, 4 - Change Display & Audio Settings.
Then changed TV is connected to... to HDMI and set the appropriate settings?
I had to do this when we got our Samsung HD TV & Cisco Virgin HD Box.
