Giving up Diet Coke!

  • Well I'm planning to get up the evil full fat coke, or at the very least cut down on the amount I've been drinking. I'm not making a big thing about it to people (friends, husband etc) as don't want people to make a big thing of it if I do have the odd glass as that will get on my wick.

I've recently 'moved' over to lemonade, which I know isn't great, but it satisfies my need for something bubbly and I find it boring and don't drink it that often and trying to drink more squash.

The problem is I really am quite addicted to the stuff and find myself desperate for it - so want to be able to shake that off and perhaps have the odd glass now and again but not actually crave it.

My husabnd has discovered the joy of making home made smoothies, so I also have those to replace coca cola with - so hopefully I will be strong and beat this evil beast.

As soon as I had my lightbulb moment, I stopped my 60p a day diet coke habit (damn vending machine at work). Have the occasional can now when there's change in my purse. OH buys it at home though, but it never tastes the same from the bottle.

I seem to drink too much coffee at work though, despite having umpteen hundred fruity teabags festooned around my desk. Hmmm...

If you need something 'sparkly' to help you give up the dreaded DC, why not try sparkling mineral water? I know it's not strictly MSE, but we get 1.5-litre bottles of naturally sparkling mineral water from our milkman (yes, really!) and it works out a lot cheaper than DC. The supermarkets usually do their own brands as well which work out even cheaper.

Maybe not as a long-term solution, but to get you through the withdrawal symptoms maybe....?...?....

  • I am really not a fan of fizzy soft drinks but good luck to people giving them up! When ever I go out, if I'm not drinking I tend to drink lime and soda water which is nice and costs about 30p a glass compared to about £1.50 for a coke! Maybe this would be a good substitute.

I could do with drinking more in all honesty, I only have two cups of coffee a day and the occasional glass of orange or pineapple juice (that's if I don't go out!)
Was debt free... then went travelling!

My mum really missed fizzy stuff when she was having chemo last year so I pointed her in the direction of the Whole Earth organic range... coke, lemonade, cranberry etc... she much prefers them to the other types of fizzy drink now! If you cant cut them out completely they might be a reasonable alternative?!

I've never really been into fizzy drinks myself unless they've got a vodka in with them.

Just wanted to wish Willsnarf and everyone else giving up the Best of Luck. I'm sure it wont be easy but if you all support each other i'm sure it can be done.

    Hello

I was addicted to coca cola and gave it up a few months ago when I first started money saving.
I grew up in a pub so was drinking coke every day as a child and then I continued to 'need' it and had to buy at least one bottle a day, if I didnt the tiredness was unbearable and I got really bad head aches!
The health issues werent enough to persuade me to give it up but the thought of saving a couple of pound a day was!! It was hard at first but now feel loads better and can have the odd coke without feeling like I have to buy it each day!!

Good luck with giving up diet coke!!
