Hi hypno, I'm really glad about the job - a blessing on lots of fronts (especially the cleaner), I'm only sorry as you will have less time for us DFWs!

For myself, its not such a clear cut decision as despite everything, I do earn quite well self-employed. The best solution would be for me to undergo a magical personality transformation and actually do my work in the allocated hours so I can enjoy the benefits of self-employment.

I am going to find find out more about this 2.5 day/week job but my gut feeling is I don't really want it.

I'll think of you tomorrow spending your birthday at a funeral. I hope that it will be an OK occasion when you can remember grandpa in his prime. Is there any chance he has bequeathed you a fortune?

    Not a chance!!

you should find out about the 2.5day job - even if only to rule it out. You will instantly know if it is right for you, and if it isn't, then steer well clear!

Morning Seax...just popped in to say HI and second Hypnos theory that at least you can rule it out.Would it not be an idea to set your day out as a structured day or is that not possible?...SE is hard as far as discipline is concerned as if you're anything like me you can find 1001 other things to do to while away the time...you will make the decision that's right for you ..I'm sure you will...take care xx

Just wondered if you have ever really sat down and thought about why you prevaricate?

I know with me part of it is the depression. But it is also that I always underestimate how long a job is going to take to do. And it can be anything. For example I am going out in a minute to do a very small shop. Should only take half an hour I think. But by the time that I have loaded younger DS into the car, and have him mess about etc (in a nice way), it is usually an hour!

So maybe the solution is to be more realistic with your time allowance for job. Ie if you think a job will take 10 billable hours, add on 10% or something to get a more realistic time for the job. That way maybe you would be less stressed with deadlines, because you had built some leeway into the system?

Also I guess when you are SE that you feel you dare not say no to any work, because you never know when the work will dry up? BUT if you are well known in your local area/field of expertise, then this is less likely isn't it? I would have thought that it is worse to take on too much work that you can't complete in a timely fashion (from a reputation point of view), than it is to take less work but get it all done on time?

I may be talking complete nonsense of course.....:D

    HI chev

Thanks for the thoughtful posts. Have you made any progress on the oil leak saga?

I wish I could get to the bottom of why I procrastinate. I have always done it so it's not going to be easy to turn it around, but that I have to do.

For all my talk of billable hours, there is very little link in my head between work and money.

When I sit down to work I seldom think 'if I do two hours now, that will be £x', instead I think 'oh help I've got to do x and y, and I should have done z weeks ago...' and it all becomes a huge horrible task and the thought that I will be paid for it doesn't really enter my head.

I need to get more hard-nosed and organised, and perhaps I will start by actually recording work booked and done in a diary, which I meant to do at the beginning of the year but never started.

This week is a busy one and as a result I've phoned in sick to my two-day-a-week job (yes even after they paid for me to go boating last week) so I must get on and make good use of the time.

HI SEAX..I used to procrastinate as well as I'm not very disciplined...I tend to think of time as money now and it seems to work or did up until today....tomorrow is a new day..so will have to get my positive head on...I think taking that one active step of putting it in your diary may actually work..why not do that as first job of the day..and then you will feel more confident....I hope you have done some work then...lol...

I'm in prevarication mode so rather than footling around on Facebook thought I'd post some good news here to give me a morale boost.

Firstly, I have the nicest clients in the world. I have been in agonies of shame and angst over one piece of work I haven't done (due in August !!) and have been avoiding contacting the client etc etc. So today I rang up and came clean and the client couldn't have been nicer. So I feel a load better instantly.

Secondly, OH is picking up a Freecycle dining table today. I don't think it's going to be a beauty, it's been in someone's garden, but is surely better than the wallpaper table we are using and doesn't cost a penny.

My camera arrived (thanks pandapaws) so once I've learned to use it (can't be hard at that price) I can list some stuff on ebay.

I'm sure there was something else... Oh yes I got a message that a friend has left a bag of chocolate chilli fudge on my desk at the office where I sometimes work. I hope it survives intact til Monday!

Money-wise things are tight, I'm waiting for two cheques to arrive and until they come I can't spend a bean. The schools are gearing up for Christmas money-grabbing frenzies, with raffle tickets coming home (and the kids primed to want to sell the most), mufti days looming and trips galore.

I'm agog to see how much OH gets paid this month. His paycheque will have to cover all Christmas spending. Luckily our kids have very low expectations (most gifts came from Freecycle last year) and we have a draw system for adults in the family so I only have to buy presents for two adults. I got lucky this year and drew my dad and my brother, both ascetic types. Even so, Christmas does entail all sorts of unexpected extra spending so I'll reluctantly have to hold back on overpayments til we get to new year.

HI Seax...that's good news that your clients were understanding.what a relief!!...nice news at getting the table from freecycle...and I'm sure your cheques will come soon and hopefully your DH should give you a fair whack of his wages so that you can sort christmas and the bills out..that's nice that your friend was thoughtful enough to leave you some fudge...yummy...
The table will probably scrub up well anyway a bit of elbow grease can go a long way...take care xx
