HI taxi, I was out today (working 2 days a week in an office)
Back now and OH has redeemed himself by bringing home a large bag of textbooks that were being chucked out of the library at the college where he works. They look like prime Amazon stock and I can't wait to list them.
How has your day been? wait, don't answer, I'll catch up on your thread and find out.Total debt: 1 January 2007 £[strike]49,387.79[/strike] 1 January 2012 £[STRIKE]19,312.85[/STRIKE] 1 August 2012 £11,517.620 -

How is work going - are you enjoying the 2 days a week?Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
The books are great - if only I could be a full-time bookseller!
The 2 days a week are OK - nice people and not too strenuous. But it's coincided with a very busy period in my other work so I resent the time really and have to keep sneaking private phone calls and emails in. I agreed to do it til the second week in Jan and then that's it, I'm not agreeing to any extension.
I am however considering applying for a similar position somewhere else - it's 2.5 days week but in a more easily commutable place. I am attracted to the idea of having my tax deducted at source for at least half the week - plus the perks of employment (especially training and keeping my skills updated). But I wonder if I'm just copying you, Hypno! I need to think it over as I do have a very successful 'business' going.
One strange outcome of my 2-day-a-week job is that I am going on a team bonding day on Friday, speed-boating on the Thames! I did ask if they didn't want to postpone it til the permanent person starts in January, but they insisted they wanted to go with me. So I get a free day out doing something I'd never do - and I'm looking forward to it!Total debt: 1 January 2007 £[strike]49,387.79[/strike] 1 January 2012 £[STRIKE]19,312.85[/STRIKE] 1 August 2012 £11,517.620 -
WOW Seax...that sounds like a wonderful day on friday...really exciting....seems like that could be the right balance a normal job for half the week as in that you get updated training...win win situation...have a great day friday0

That day on Friday sounds good fun!
Re the job/self employment - all I can say is that when it came along for me, it just "felt" right. So there was not too much need for hesitation.
You will do what you feel is right for you, of that I am sure! Good luck in getting that balance right xxSuccessful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
Thanks ladies. Hypno, good to see the ski total creeping up, and I'll be sending a contribution very soon. Is the debt total coming down as well?Total debt: 1 January 2007 £[strike]49,387.79[/strike] 1 January 2012 £[STRIKE]19,312.85[/STRIKE] 1 August 2012 £11,517.620

The debt total is pretty static at the moment. I think it is swings and roundabouts! I am a bit confused by it because I have had to pay for skis on the credit card, but am offsetting that by making overpayments when I can to cover the cost of the skis, but no more than that (if that makes sense!).
I have to admit we each have an egg loan, with very low apr because Egg messed up big time, and I have taken a payment holiday with them until I get my first salary payment - the transition from "use the money as it comes in" of self employment habit, to "payday at the end of the month and not a penny before" is a little daunting, and I don't want to fall flat on my face during my first month, so am trying to get prepared. By having a payment holiday, I don't actually end up paying much more because of the low apr of these, so it makes sense to do that rather than risk bank charges, but it does mean that the totals will temporarily stop.
Sorry, waffling now - anyway.......2008, those figures will fall big time.....or else!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
Hi hypno, I can really sympathise. I am sure life will get a lot easier for you once you have a regular salary coming in.Total debt: 1 January 2007 £[strike]49,387.79[/strike] 1 January 2012 £[STRIKE]19,312.85[/STRIKE] 1 August 2012 £11,517.620

It really will give us some structure in our lives again - which has not happened since I went SE. Also, the certainty of income is a great relief. So, I am "stalling" stuff until Jan 2008, when I know what I am earning etc etc, I can do a real budget/SOA and start hammering down those debts again.
I am still pretty happy with what we have achieved in 2007, so can't be too disappointed that it is not dropping at the moment, especially with the ski fund money going up.
Roll on 1st payday!! I am going there this afternoon to finalise things, hopefully!!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0
