Hey Seax - I wonder if you're busy making OH more complient with the finances?

Hope all is well and I would keep the £15 and use it towards the mouse upkeep.

If only! Instead we're having the usual tense exchanges about money. Most recently about where we get the money to pay the plasterer upfront for the work in our dining room. The insurance co is going to pay but we need to buy some materials upfront so guess where that's coming from, yes, my bank account....

I had a busy weekend - spent most of the £15 mouse money going to pick up a rescue mouse as company for our sole survivor. The newcomer is twice the size of poor Zephyr and bosses her about mercilessly. She also, we think, has worms! So I will have to spend £1 on worming powder, and god knows how you administer that to mice.

What else? Oh yes, the DDs had their 13th birthday yesterday (the most low-budget birthday ever, we gave them much-needed knickers and socks for their presents). Good little DFWs that they are they start their paper round this week. They are delivering papers seven days a week in the holidays, which means that I won't have to give them any pocket money.

Thanks for looking in you two. I haven't been on this site much so will hunt for your diaries now to catch up.

  • Hello Seaxwyn

I just thought I'd butt in and say that I've been reading your thread and am rooting for you...

I really hope your OH has a lightbulb moment soon - it must be so hard for you. I was in a very similar situation once and it was awful. I can understand why he can't face dealing with it but it's so much better when you face things together, isn't it? Maybe the lots of sex approach will help him to see the light!

Hope you don't mind me joining in... But I've been so glad when you've had good days and have been silently commiserating on your bad days and thought it would be nice to say hello...

    Hello Julia

Thanks for your lovely message! It made my day hearing that you are rooting for me - thanks!

I hope he has a lightbulb moment too. He does hover on the brink of it but his earnings are so uncertain I think he is just too scared to face reality. But he is delivering sandwiches tomorrow, and going to the art school on Weds to talk about next year (please God let that yield results) so all is not grim.

Thanks again for popping in and don't be shy, please keep posting.

  • Reality is a scary place to be... But he obviously isn't afraid of hard work if he's off doing sandwich rounds and I really hope he gets the lecturing job. I used to work in FE when I was a single parent and it was a nightmare worrying about which classes I would be offered and whether they would get sufficient students to run. In fact I couldn't find a teaching post at all when I moved to Cheshire - no one want to learn German apparently :( - so I'm going to do an MA in TESOL and try and get back to English teaching instead (loads and loads of Polish people round here).

What sort of writing and editing do you do??? I think you're amazing to fit it round all your kids - I'm realising that I'm going to have to be a lot more disciplined when I start my MA and spend a bit less time on here!

TGood luck with the MA. There must be plenty of work for TESOL teachers. Self-employment can be scary but I do like it really - never boring.

I write and edit for a number of charities and organisations mostly in the international development sector - anything from promotional leaflets and website news to editing magazines and reports. It's always interesting and I like the way it makes me feel that I'm part of the wider world, most days I have to phone or email people in other countries and it still always gives me a thrill.

I hope you do better than me on the self-discipline front. I'm hopeless. The internet is a huge distraction and I find it really hard to work with the children about. I'm dreading the holidays as there has been no progress on moving my desk to the shed!

OH visited the art school today and was offered 4 days/week next year. However he didn't ask all the questions he should have so doesn't know if this is for the first term only or for the whole year.

What he will be doing is "delivering the dissertation unit for the BA animation cohort" - does that sound like a whole year's work, those in the know?

As the Human Resources person who was meant to be in the meeting didn't show up (grrrrr) we don't know if this will be freelance paid on an hourly rate, or salaried which is a lower day rate but more perks.

Anyway, it has to be good news.

Well I don't claim to know anything much about it but when I did my dissertation at uni it was spread over the whole third year. It sounds like it would be a year long contract for your OH but I'm not sure if every college does it the same way - if it's anything like mine then the students do it all themselves anyway - I think I had one hour of contact time with my lecturer over the whole year on it!

Oops, that wasn't very helpful! It sounds like positive news for you either way and I really hope it starts to make life easier for you.

Glad to hear your good news about your OH's job next year. Hope it's salaried/secure (if that's what you and he want!).
