  • My daughter was in our room for the first few months, and this little one will be too,
we are trying to get the nursery done in time (just so its one less thing that needs doing when we could be holding the baby instead) but he wont sopend a night in his own room this year... so its not a major problem if it stays as it is for now!

Can you parents enlighten me as to where a baby sleeps?

Depends on how long you want them in your room!

My eldest lasted 2 nights! He made so much noise in his sleep snuffling and gurgling, that I wasn't getting any sleep at all. I just lie listening thinking "he's going to wake up in a minute". I'm no good with too little sleep, so I put him in his own room so I could get some decent sleep.

My second and third babies went in their own rooms from birth.

I know it's against guidlines and all that but sometimes you have to draw the line between following everything to the letter and your own common sense.

Because we're doing up a nursery, but if the baby is going to be sleeping in our bedroom for, what was it 6 months, then I really don't need to worry about that yet.
We have a small room, currently computer room, where nursery would be, and a large spare room which was going to be used as guest/play room with computers in it. But am wondering now if we should leave the computers where they are...(they take so much space and make so much mess)
Aaarrgghh. I know nothing about babies, let alone where I will want them to be...
We had ours in with us initially but ended up with her sleeping in her own room by the time she was two weeks old. In theory it was more convenient for feeding to have her in with us but I found it much easier to feed her in an armchair than in bed and also needed the light which would disturb my husband. As she was also a very noisy sleeper it seemed silly to have her in our room then carry her into her own room to feed and then bring her back so we started putting her in her own room with the monitor so we can hear if she cries but don't hear every little noise she makes. I found it made such a difference to the quality of sleep that I had so was definitely worth it. Having said that, it was worth having her in with us the first week as we both got up and I just fed the baby and my husband helped by doing all the burping/changing etc. If I had another I would still start with it in our room but would definitely have somewhere else ready for them as an option. If you're using a moses basket (as opposed to a cot) , you can move it between rooms pretty easily which helps to give you options.

My eldest two were in my room for about 5 months,I think. Not sure when little man will move- suppose it will be when he outgrows basket, which will be in next few weeks at the rate he is growing!

Just a plug for Sure Start and a reminder for all the new Mams to check out what's on in your area.

So far I've done a baby massage course, baby lifesaving and been to a weaning party. We're off to a baby singing and rhyme class in the library this afternoon, and in time we'll progress into the toddler storytime and rhyme group.

I like the singing group as some of the Mam's go for a drink together afterwards, so I've made some new friends.

It's really worth seeing what is on in your area, and it's all free too!

  • I'm jealous: the only thing I'm eligible for at our surestart is a breastfeeding group. Everything else is either for toddlers or for parents under 25.

Anyway, I was actually posting to give this link: http://www.thebabywebsite.com/article.870.Child_Car_Seats_Warning.htm
in case anybody is looking for a new carseat at the moment. They got their information from the latest Which report. I joined which online (£1 trial) to check out the information in more detail but really, all it does is give you a breakdown of the scores (they get marks out of 5 on various aspects such as front impact, side impact, ease of fitting etc.) so to be honest all the information you need is in this article.

Nappies - we use cotton bottoms and bambineo real nappies. The cotton bottoms have poppers and would be suitable from birth until potty. The Bambineo are velcro and would do similarly.

Both are of the 'teddy' variety (think cuddly toy rather than traditional cotton ones) and dry incredibly quickly on the line. My old ones used to take literally days!

The Bambineo ones are less bulky but no less absorbant.

EmmyLou knows loads about this and could arrange for someone to visit you and demonstrate some of the nappies if you want. Just flick back through this thread for when I was asking similar Qs!

Nurseries - we had Imogen's nursery decorated before she arrived (lovely shade of apple green) and moved her in there at around 14 weeks. She was breaking out of her swaddling and 'windmilling' her arms around in her sleep. When in her moses basket she would bash her arms on the sides and wake herself up so we decided to put her in her own room and un-swaddle her. It worked a treat and we've never had any probs.

I know that the advice is 6 months but think this is a very personal choice. My view is that if she was going to die of cot death, I couldn't do anything more about it if she was in a moses basket next to me than if she was in her own room.

If you are decorating before baby arrives make sure 1) hubby does all the painting (just supervise!) and 2) you finish at least 4 weeks before your EDD to allow the fumes to disperse from the house.

    Good luck!

  • We put Charlie in his own room when he was 11 weeks old, and it was the best thing for us. It was as soon as he slept through for a reasonable time through the night, so he was in bed before we went up, then we didn't disturb him when we were changing for bed or getting up for the loo in the night,

before that every time DH turned over he would wake up.

Just popped in really to catch up, and to say that i am joining bailey, and we are expecting number 2. Charlie is 46 weeks at the minute, so it will be a gap of about 19 months. We are happy, but i am already thinking logistics like how can i possibly save up for maternity leave like i did last time. The plus side though is the 9 months maternity leave. ;)

Anyway, hope you are all well - i am having a bit of a whirlwind week getting used to being back at work and taking charlie to nursery every day.

Hi Spinning Hamster Wheel - I remember your thread about being induced and have been wondering how you got on (I'm appallingly nosey, sorry! :)).

Congratulations, Amelie is a lovely name. Welcome to the parent club! :hello:

I've been meaning so join in on here more but can't seem to get a second. Thanks for wondering about me:o being induced was, ahem, as fine as it could have been I suppose.

Amelie is 11 weeks! We're breastfeeding, co-sleeping and using reusable nappies (bamineo/tots bots/cotton bottoms) so I must be the only 22 year old earth mother who loves Topshop!
Shes so fantastically content, never really fusses or cries, compared to my son I'd never know shes here half the time! :rotfl:

I'd like to make more of an effort to join in the parent club, congratulations on expecting no. 2 Michelle! 19 months sounds like a good age gap, here's hoping you get the 12 months maternity leave!;)

Hope you dont mind me asking, but whats sure start?
