oh my lord, i really should know that, i've fed my friends baby often enough and all her cartons say dont use after 1 hr. i didnt know it was the same with breast milk! i thought you could pump it out and just use it

i sooooooooooo need to do some reading before we decide what we're doing!

according to some guidelines breastmilk keeps for up to 4 hour s at room temp (ie about 20degs) and 48 in the fridge - some only say an hour though.

I was talking about formula actually. Expressed breastmilk actually has a much longer shelf life.

Human milk has been found to have properties that protect it from bacterial contamination which allow it to be stored longer than was previously thought. Guidelines for breastmilk storage are as follows:
    • Freshly expressed breastmilk may be kept at room temperature for up to 10 hours

Maybe older mothers have more patience to try and are wiser to make up their own mind? I doubt many ladies chose to breastfeed because of the money!!!!! That would make no difference to my mind to bf or not!

hmmm, i suppose it depends how money saving keen you are :p

i was just thinking cos i assume everyone gets the same advice etc from their midwife (yes in theory i know) and was just wondering why there was such a divide.

    It's a class issue.

Middle class mothers are more likely to breast-feed and are also more likely to delay childbirth for career reasons.

76% of women start breastfeeding, but for mothers under 20, mothers, it's just 52%. Mothers who are not from mangerial or professional backgrounds are twice as likely to give formula from birth.

There is actually a website aimed at combatting this

also younger mothers more bothered by their friends opinions? i.e i doubt a 15yr old teen mother would want to be seen doing it?

So, middle class mums, who delayed the childbirth, probably earn more than younger mothers and choose to breastfeed more than younger ones, so I very much doubt that they would choose that because of the money (I wouldn't, I am 29). They make a more concious decision, I think - to give all the best they can for the baby.

  • xcat_girlx I am sure it is just naivety but using phrases like 'boobs round your ankles' and saying 'hanging off me' in relation to breastfeeding is pretty offensive. Sorry. It's just not like that. My boobs are fine and I've been feeding him for nearly a year. I have a few pale white stretchmarks, but I got those while pregnant (check out the 'pregnancy's best kept secrets' thread for the wonderful dirt on this miracle of pregnancy and birth!). They'd be there if I'd never fed him. And he doesn't 'hang' off me. He snuggles into me and makes little noises of contentment and actually it's quite beautiful.

I am sure you did not intend offence. But please think of others before you use what is pretty negative language.

I was just casting my mind back to an earlier thread on this subject which I'm sure some of us remember and I'm sure xcat-girlx's comments would have gone down similarly there - best not worry too much about the breastfeeding until you actually get pg xcat-girlx I reckon x

Anyhow was wondering if anybody had any advice on starting big school and settling in - my DD started a few weeks ago (she's 4 and a half) and she is crying and clinging to me most mornings which is upsetting - I try and get out asap on advice of the teacher but it's taken me by surprise a bit as usually she's very confident and I didn't imagine she's have too many probs with big school (she'd been at a day nursery for a long time previously)
My son started last year so he's now in year 1 and he was fine so not sure what I can do to help her.
Anyone had this issue and did it resolve fairly quickly?
  • Flying post as am at work

I just wanted to post about the Be A Star campaign - young and teen mothers who breastfeed and look GREAT!

Hope you find this an interesting site xcat_girlx :)

I have to agree - BF is definitely in my view the way to go - if we were meant to feed formula then we'd surely not have these milk producing blobs in front? :)
Ok if you don't produce enough for whatever reason then fine - formula is a great substitution! Or as they did in the olden days - go to someone who has more milk than their little one needs and allow little 'un to feed once a day there :)
ON that subject: If I produce more than is needed - which going on sheer size and family history from my mum I will... - is there a network set up where I can "share" my surplus and help someone else? Like someone here getting breast milk from someone else when they were little?
