am looking for advice have 4 kids and the oldest 3 all slept all night from day one however no 4 will not sleep all night hence why im up at this time????

he goes down no prob at around 8pm but is up at 1am and 3am before getting up at 7.30. he is now 6 1/2months and thought that he would be sleeping allnight by now but no such luck. have tried everything such as extra milk at night, waking him as i go to bed to give him more, changing his milk, rusk/porridge/baby rice at bedtime and still no luck lol. oh i also got some of the nighttime milk to try but he got up even more during the night.
he doesnt sleep much during the day spending most of the time rolling around and shouting. please help i feel like a zombie!!!!

I was in the same boat with DD2, after DD1 who slept through the night from 6 weeks. DD2 however, was still doing the routine you describe at 16 months and I was at my wits end.

The way I broke the cycle was to organise my day better and get (force!) her into a nap routine. She has lunch at 12ish then goes to bed and I allow her to sleep no later than half two/three ish. Then bed at 7 - 7.30pm. Sometimes she doesn't seem to want her nap or to go to bed, but I leave her there to cry, brutal as that sounds, she will eventually go to sleep 99% of the time.

Also, I think the other thing that sealed the deal was that I stopped offering milk if she woke during the night. Prior to that as I didn't want her to disturb DD1, I would get her out of the cot and have her fed in double quick time, which was just rewarding her for waking up. The first couple of nights were complete hell, she screamed the house down for hours (no exaggeration) but it didn't disturb DD1 and it did the trick as after these 2 nightmare nights, she slept through the night. That was in February and she has slept through ever since. She still wakes at 6am every day, but I can just about handle that!

I'm not sure this will be the right course of action for you as 6 months is still quite young to leave them to cry at night, but I certainly think you will benefit if you can get him to have nap during the day. It doesn't seem overly logical that they will sleep better at night when they've slept during the day, but it has definitely been the case in my own experience.
  • Can anyone help me with my problem. My son who is 10 mths old has suddenly turned into a monster when having his nappy changed. Screams and trys to get away....now he can crawl and roll. Every nappy change is turning into a huge battle. Tried giving a toy to amuse himself with but no joy!

This was discussed quite recently actually, the same question was asked by Agutka. If you go back to post number 3602 and have a read from there you might get some ideas... the best one being Snaggles sticker trick (#3620) ;)

thanks for the replies, i will start the nap thing tom as we have so much going on today but rest of the week is free so would be better to start and continue. i wasnt sure if he was waking due to being hungry but after the feed he had last night before bed i dont think that it is the case. am thinking about the night crying thing the now as it is the holidays and it would be easy enough to leave him in the room adn move his brother out for a few nights (baby has been in with us but as we have jus moved think its an ideal time to get him in his own room, cot and sleeping all night)

thanks for the advice and fingers crossed, will let you all know how it goes:j

  • Hi all just logged in for some moral support please. Just feeling low and a crap parent. I've been weaning Molly since she turned 4 months, so we've been doing it for 6-7 weeks now. the only thing I can get her to successfuolly eat is baby rice and apple/pear jars!!!!!!

I am at my wits end, I have lovingly made purees in the freezer and she refuses them point blank, or if some dares to go past her lips, she spits it out and gets in a right paddy. To me home-mnade food must be nicer than a jar, but she seems to prefer the smoother texture of jars, so won't eat anything savoury mine or jar.

I feel awful and trying to go with the flow, but I want her on family food/mealtimes suitable for her age, like I did with Jack, then just increase the texture etc until normal food.

Please help me, I am getting wound up by it and of course baby rice and apple/pear isn't exactly a mixed and varied diet is it? Btw, can't offer anything with milk in due to age and ezcema.

I do have to laugh at myself when all Jack would eat until 7 months was my purree apple and yoghurt, but he was weaned at 6 months and could have dairy. And at least he would eat my purees. Jars are expensive and I don't want to buy them.

    Rant over, for now.

And I did buy a potty chair for Jack the safety 1st one and he has been successfully weeing in it!. I haven't perserved much as we've not been in to spend hours concentrating on it, but he might get about an hour after tea without a nappy.

I have even tried a high ratio or jar fruit to my purees.........she knows!
  • BAILEY - have you tried mixing you purees with baby rice and milk?

Bailey - have you tried offering her more solid food. My mum discovered that Izzy liked french bread while we were on holiday when she was 8 months old - up til then she'd been turning her nose up at all the purees I'd been offering. From then on I started offering her food that wasn't pureed and off we went! Incidentally she didn't get her first tooth until nearly 12 months, so managed very well with just gums!

Anybody got any ideas on toys to buy for a nearly 7 month old? Apart from a few rattles and soft toys Tom doesn't have many and we're looking to buy him one or two. He does especially like things that play music or are ball shaped but open to ideas really. Looking preferably for things he can hold himself that he doesn't drop all the time. If they're available in Boots or Argos that's even more of a bonus as I have gift cards from there from when he was born.
    Thanks in advance!
