That's useful info re the HV suggestion, thanks Lu - never too sure how much to be feeding. My LO now seems to be making some progress. She's been having a couple of large cubes of mixtures of parsnip or carrot or sweet potato for lunch and then a couple of pear bulked out with babyrice just before bedtime. Only been two days of real success so far, but she has slept two nights running. She seems to find it hard taking it off the spoon, so use my finger until she gets going and then I have more success with the spoon. Tons comes back out of her mouth but I just scoop it back in again and we slowly empty the bowl!!
:j
Lu, I had to have a chuckle at Imogen's 46oz of milk :D - bless her little hollow legs :rotfl:- what a stupendous appetite. Long may it last (as I've also got a 4yo who is totally disinterested in eating... unless it's chocolate, sweet, crisps or biscuits of course ), I love it when you get kids with a healthy appetite. Let us know how she gets on with your HV regime. It looks good - I will add in brekkie tomorrow, now we seem to be getting somewhere.0 -
I hardly dare tempt fate but just had third night in a row where she didn't wake up, not even for her normal 11pm feed. 7pm through to 6.30am, well impressed.
:T
The same can't be said for 4yo DD1 who came into us at 3.30am complaining that she'd had a bad dream and couldn't get back to sleep, then she put her lullaby cd on and turned up the volume.
Can't have everything I suppose... if it's not one it's the other. Should be grateful she didn't manage to wake up DD2 really.
DD2 has had oat and apple cereal for breakfast. Seems to be a bit constipated though, only doing very small amounts of number 2 at a time and its very solid. She is also doing a lot of straining with no success. Anyone got any suggestions - I'm going to get some prune juice later, not got any fruit juice in the house other than the horrible apple juice made from concentrate that DD1 likes - not sure whether to try a diluted solution of that as I've read that apple can cause constipation. I've read a solution of small amount of sugar in boiled water to drink can help, anyone tried that?
Out of interest how much water do you offer your babies each day? I only ever give mine milk as I've been thinking she gets hydration from that and water might take the edge of how much milk she'd drink. What's the best way to give them water without reducing milk intake? Anyone worked it out?0 -
Hi Purplepatch
Having some success with the new regime. She is settled on her 3 meals a day and is now down to nearer 30oz of milk. We're trying to wean her off her 11pm feed. It's always been a dream feed, but she normally gets up for brekkie at 6am, so we don't want her to be any hungrier!
However - I woke her up at 6.50am this morning for her breakfast and she wasn't crying hungry, so perhaps we're getting somewhere. :T
For constipation - dilute fresh apple juice (not cordial or concentrate). I think you should do about 1 part juice to 10 parts water.
Or I've just made a puree of prunes and apricots. Bought them dried, soaked overnight in cold water, then change the water and boil for a few minutes, then blend. Add it to cereal or baby rice (just a bit though) and this should help with the 'movements'. It's an NCT recipe from their 'First foods and weaning' book.
More water will also help. Imogen has a cup which we fill in a morning and offer at each meal. She doesn't usually get through it all but does seem thirsty at times, mainly after meals. It shouldn't put her off her milk.
HV advised not to get one of those non-spill cups as apparently they mean the little ones don't learn about pouring it over themselves, so we just bought a cheap Asda one. The alternative is to take the valve out of any non-spill cups you have. Imogen's doing really well with her cup now. She knows to grab both handles but needs a bit of help to steer it towards her mouth.

Becles, another gorgeous girl! Your condition does sound comical in hindsight - bet it wasn't at the time though. Bet you're glad it's over and you can get on with being a moneysaving mum!MSE Parent Club Member #1Yummy slummy mummy club member50% slummy, 50% mummy, 100% proudImogen born Boxing Day 2006Alex born 13 July 20090

Poor love. I have never heard of the rash on the forehead!0 -

I haven't heard of that either. Have you tried phoning nhs direct for advice? Has she eaten anything different recently, ie could it be an allergic reaction and the teething might just be coincidence?0 -
I use Ashton and Parsons powders which really help settle her down. They are much like Calpol but herbal. Get them from most chemists. You just sprinkle a bit of powder on their tongue (much easier than trying to get a spoon into a screaming mouth) and they really seem to help. I would also get the hives checked out though, just in case.
Purplepatch - you inspired me! I didn't give Imogen her 11pm dreamfeed last night and she slept until 6.30am!! Not bad at all. And she wasn't hysterical when she woke up either, so keep your fingers crossed we don't have to keep ourselves up for that late feed any more. This also means she down to around 24oz of milk plus her 3 meals a day, so that's a lot more reasonable. Hurrah!MSE Parent Club Member #1Yummy slummy mummy club member50% slummy, 50% mummy, 100% proudImogen born Boxing Day 2006Alex born 13 July 20090 -

if i remember rightly you should offer water with the meals,
i know its hard for us to see it this way but milk is still just food to the baby, and water is a drink,
it really shouldnt cut down milk intake at all, as far as the baby is concerned its not the same thing.
they might not take to it straight away but offer it at every meal and they will soon get the idea
and i reckon it will sort out the constipation problems.0 -

Good stuff!
I think I spoke too soon as mine's started waking at 4ish again. Last night I woke her for the 11pm dreamfeed and still she woke. The especially annoying thing is that she doesn't like going back to bed after the 4am feed - seems to think it's time to get up for the day! :rolleyes:0
