Just chilling out after a mental afternoon with 14 kids  at Imogen's joint birthday party. Luckily we had chosen to hold it at a local community centre which also provided all of the toys and a huge room for them to make a mess of :T Imogen had a fab time, but was totally knackered by the time we got home. And DH had his final exam for his professional qualification today (we only found out the date after the party was booked) so I was a single parent for the day. I admire anyone who does what I've done today day-in-day-out. It's been tough and I'm also knackered.

Just watching the new CSI - hurrah for a new series! Hope you've all had a good weekend. Oh, and thanks for sharing about the AF :o !!

  • Hi guys,

Sorry to be asking for help so early on but I wanted to check with people who are in the know ;)

My little one has a smell coming from the cord stump. (He will be 1 week old in about 5 hours time). I can't see any discharge from it and it doesn't seem to be bothering him but its a really noticable smell when we undress him.

Should I call the ward and get a midwife to check him over? I don't want to be a panicy parent and am aware it's saturday night so don't even know if anyone will be able to see him.
  • If you are at all concerned call NHS direct - they will tell you if it's necessary for someone to see him tonight, tomorrow or Monday.

I have called them a number of times over the last year for DS.

In my very limited experience there was a weird smell with the stump as it dried up, but what was normal for DS might not be normal for another child.
    The IVF worked;DS born 2006.

Hi Shelvis, I'd give the ward a ring and ask their advice. If it isn't gooey at all then it probably isn't infected, just the smell of dead tissue getting a bit sweaty. I expect they'll put your mind at rest. I wouldn't worry about it being Saturday night, there has to be midwives on duty all the time and that's what they are there for :)

Or like J's other half says, NHS direct are always great to ring too.

    Dear all

Hello, I hope that you are all well. Hello to the newbies. I hope it's going well, Congratulations Shelvis. Re: cord stump, I would keep an eye on it and ask MW on her next attendance and if you do get worried before then give them a call. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.

My lil man is now not so little. He is six months already and 18lb 8oz, which is just over average for his age. I think he's gonna be a big boy, he was 8lb 2.5oz at birth and has steadily put weight on. He's always had a big appetite. The weaning has now settled too and we are up to three meals a day with dessert after his eveing meal. I'm using amixture of purees I've done, powders and cans/jars. All appear to satisfy him and it is definitely filling him more than BF was. He's still having his BF and one bottle per day and I'm hoping to increase bottles soon, although I'm happy with BF I feel it's about time I got a bit of time to myself and let someone else feed him.

Back to work in two months. The past seven have flown by. I'm feeling nervous however am looking forward to being Jenny Youth Worker as well as Jenny Mum.

Have been struggling a bit with my weight maintenance. I went back to WW in Sept and got to Goal just before Christmas, however with Christmas and eating lots of Choc, I am 3lb over goal. I know this isn't a lot but as I'm a tight cow I don't want to have to start paying to go to WW again and if I go up another 2lb i will have to. Lets' hope I can stay within the 5lb excess they allow.

Anyway re: monthlies, I can't remember when I got them back with DD1 &2 but it was quite a long while after I had them. Not had any yet but as I am still BF know they will be less frequent than usual. I'm in no rush though.

Anyway take care. Have a good weekend.

I'm not going to go into too much detail here, but let's just say it's taken us a lot less than a month both times. :o

(Probably due to hardly any action during the actual pregnancy... :o)

Better go before DH reads this :rotfl:

:rotfl:.....and I'd better go before my DH reads this :rotfl:

(poor chap, feel quite sorry for him now I appear to be in the minority! :o:D).

I can remember the cord stump being smelly, but I would mention it to the HV just in case it is an infection or something.

Charlotte has discovered lots of silly noises now. We're in fits of giggles listening to her :rotfl:
Here I go again on my own....
  • Thanks for all your help guys. We poked it a bit when we changed him and it didn't seem to bother him so I figure if it was a nasty infection it would hurt him  the midwife is coming tomorrow anyway so I will mention it to her then.

Yeah, I can remember the cord being a bit smelly too towards the end. It's probably going to drop off soon (Alex's fell off at 9 days, and I actually remember it getting a little bit gooey right at the end - I got a bit worried - and then it promptly fell off ).

EDIT: well it's funny how quickly you forget stuff! Just went back in the thread and it turns out the cord fell off at 5 days, not 9! :rotfl:
