  • thanks girls i might not have made i clear (my head is full of cotton wool at the moment) but my question wasnt really about formula v breast milk,
it was how much i should be expressing (and there is seriously no need to worry about my milk supply.... i could feed ALL of your babies and mine with these puppies!:))

seems it doesnt matter now anyway, i posted because i was worried he wasnt feeding enough and wether that was just me expecting too much of a newborn (never having fed by bottle at this age before) or wether it was a side effect of the jaundice
but last night he decided to feed like a piglet! so he seems to have his appetite at last

Great news CG. But you haven't told us what you've called the little darling!

(BTW - You made me laugh out loud with your comment about plentiful supply in your "puppies" :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: )

  • ahhh sorry, He is called Daniel (and thanks to me posting earlier he decided hes still not interested in feeding  )
he obviously hasnt read all the books and had all the medical training that makes the professionals tell you that he should be feeding every 3 to 4 hours, most of the time he wont even entertain the idea until its been about 5 hours between feeds...
he is peeing, pooing and has periods of being very alert and apart from being a grumpy so and so today (and still being a bit yellow of course) he seems fine

why do babies make you second guess everything??!!
as my DD is 7 1/2 i had forgotten all the bloody worry that comes with one of these things! :D

here he is... (taken on day 2...before the attack of the simpsons *jaundice*)

awww - what a handsome chap CG

Charlotte kept getting jaundice. It would go, then come back again, then go again and so on. I think it went on for about 3-4 weeks after she was born before it finally went for good.

Sunlight helps, so if you get any sunny days, pop him front of the window. It was easier doing this in May, than now though!
Here I go again on my own....

I think being outside helps generally with newborns. There's something in sunlight (even in this weather) which helps them set their bodyclock properly. I went out religiously every day with Imogen between 12 and 2pm and she soon got rid of her nocturnal-ness! It's hard when you've had a c-section, but even a gentle walk min walk will clear your head and help you heal. Just make sure you can get out of the house without lugging the pram over steps etc otherwise you'll need some help. The last thing you want is to ping those stiches!!

I'm quite pleased actually as my scar is barely visible now. I used Bio-Oil (with discount voucher in the Bounty pack) and it's just a silver line most days. It has its purple days but not often ;);) The only thing is, I still don't have any feeling for about 3 inches down from my belly button. The area's about 3"x3". I can feel pressing, but if you stuck me with a pin I wouldn't know about it. Does anyone else have weird numbness following a c-section?

Also, any tips for getting rid of wind from an 11-mth old? She was up for an hour last night screaming. :-( It doesn't happen often so we don't keep gripe water in the house (it goes off after 12 days). Any other home remedies gratefully received. I just rubbed her belly and back for 45 mins solid.

  • I was told not to push a pram for 6 weeks after my section, or a shopping trolley for that matter, so bear that in mind if you are going out.

My C scar has healed very well, and I have most of the feeling back. Mine was a week before yours Lu T.

    hi girls,
wondering if you could help me...

is there any bottle feeders here that know what their newborn took from the bottle (and how often) in the very early days?

yep me - I wrote it down!

i would like him to have my milk, but he just doesnt seem to care and to be honest hasnt really been @rsed about feeding since birth.... maybe i will have to switch to formula?

Go for it, I Bottlefed DS and it was the best decision all round for us, dont' let people guilt trip you into doing something you don't want to do. The important thing is to get your baby fed!

    right - details:
I'd go on age not weight. When my boy was 2 weeks old he was 6lb and was drinking approx 14-16oz a day split into 2/3hrly feeds 6am, 9am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm, 8pm, 12pm, 3am. So I'd make up 3oz bottles each time and he'd drink ebtween 1 and 3 oz.

Generally a formula fed baby should have 2 1/2 times their body weight in ounces of milk. So at 6lb baby gets 15oz, at 10lb baby gets 25oz.

Up until baby weighs 7lb you will need to feed 2-3 hrly, from 7-9lb you can probably start to leave 4hrs in between nighttime feeds. We switched to rough times of 6am, 9am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm, 10pm, 2am, at about 6 weeks (7.5lb) with 3-4oz in each bottle.

    We then started to try and shift the nighttime feeds so we could get a stretch of 5-6 hrs of sleep between 12pm and 6am. It took a while but by 3 months we got to feed times of;
    6am, 9am, 11.30am, 3.30pm, 5.30pm, 6.30pm, (cluster feed) 11pm (dreamfeed).
He was actually sleeping from 11.30pm - 5.30am at 13 weeks which was great.

(btw - great part of bottle feeding was that DH would do the last feed before midnight so I would go to bed at 9pm and then even when I was getting up at 3am for a feed i had had SOME sleep between 9 and 3.)

I've used Dentinox on Charlie (he's only 12 weeks old) and it sorted his wind out really quickly. It also came with a plastic syringe thingy which we found great.
