  • Bear in mind if your licence has expired and not renewed it will be revoked by DVLA and if you carry on driving then your insurance is not valid and driving without insurance means a MINIMUM of 6 points and £200 fine but can be a lot more.
well worth checking now that you licence is still valid

If the licence has expired (normally when you are 70, and then every three years), it cannot be revoked - it has already expired.
  • And, when you do get your new photo card back, CHECK the details on it! My husband renewed his in Mid February 2012 and it came back as valid until 28th Feb 2012. We did not pick this up until August when he needed his licence for something else, it caused a real hassle at the time and he had to pay the renewal fee again!

Actually most insurance policies remain valid even if the licence has been revoked ("provided that he holds or has held and is not disqualified from holding a valid licence" is the usual wording) - not that licences can be revoked over an out of date photocard anyway.

Rubbish. It's purely an administrative thing. Maybe if you didn't renew at 70, where you're required to submit to being medically fit to continue driving, then yes, that may well invalidate your insurance (although it might still be covered for 3rd party risks - I don't know). But not renewing an expired photocard photograph? That has no bearing on your driving entitlement.
  • Realised photo needed renewed - checked hubby's licence, him too. All addresses up to date and no renewal.

Neither of us have a passport so filled in the forms, took our own photos & sent off. Returned as photos do not conform - though no instruction given as to why.

Repeated this process 3 times (couldn't afford to pay the ridiculous costs at Post Office/Tesco etc for photos AND the cheeky £20) - each time returned, though not always with cheque (easily cancelled).

Contacted DVLA for advice - couldn't give any - told to get proper pic done and try that. Advised couldn't really afford it and photos were actually of better quality than originals (which had apparently expired). Obv they weren't interested.

Got proper pics done - sent off - new cheque etc etc - guess what - still not ok.

Think I've tried enough to be honest - they can sod off :rotfl::T

Just tried to renew photocard driving licence on-line but wouldn't let me because apparently my passport is over 5 years old even though I only renewed it in 2011. Anyone else had similar problems?

Just got my first photocard license with with a passport than was issued in 2004.
  • If you are over 70 & photo is due to expire prior to the licence expiry date you do NOT have to renew your photo as the licence is renewable every 3 years. I have confirmed this with the DVLA
  • Hi
I've been driving for only 3 years - so why do I need to renew mine? Any ideas?;)
  • A friend of mine was stopped by the police yesterday for routine check. He produced his paper driving license which expires in 2048. The police ran a check and promptly told him his license had 'expired' and that he couldn't drive another inch. They towed and impounded his car (approx £165.00 + £20.00 per day). He questioned the police why his license could be expired when it clearly displayed it was still valid and they just blamed the DVLA saying they were working through batches at a time and just expiring them. He's continued arguing with the police today but is getting absolutely nowhere by all accounts.

By that token, several million drivers may be driving illegally without any knowledge depending on whether they've been secretly expired by the DVLA! Mine's is a paper license with an expiry date of 2037 so it could be me next. I can't find any reference to this on the Gov.uk site.

Whilst I accept the DVLA are trying to phase out paper licenses by 2014 ideally, surely they can't just expire someones license before then and not tell them?
