You can't go to jail for driving without a licence, unless you've actually been disqualified from driving after being convicted by a court. Even then it's vanishingly unlikely that you'd be jailed if the ban was imposed in your absence and there was a good reason why you were unaware of it.

The problem is, they've changed the contract I had with them.

The booklet they sent with the licence, said the fee I had paid would "cover all future renewals, including renewal after 70".

Do you still have this booklet? Can you scan and post it somewhere?

  • Mine runs out 21 of sept 12. Got the reminder and decieded to deal with it straight away online. What they don't tell you is that your new one starts from the date of application and not from the expiry date on your old one. So in effect I have lost over a month. They send the reminder out upto 3months before expiry date.

The MSE article says you can "print an application from the Directgov website".

But I can't find this anywhere.

Even the Direct.gov website says "fill in the photo renewal form D798", but there is nowhere to find this mythical form.

Seems to be a puzzle what to do; trying to renew my father's photocard which expires in 10 days, but also require a change of address.
  • Tried the post office?

Just got a D1 form from the post office, thanks for your advice. (Now just have to find the "paper counterpart"!)

Incidentally the MSE advice that you can print a form from the website is apparently completely wrong.

And it seems that D798 is only sent to the registered address, it can't be printed or obtained elsewhere.

I've still got my old paper licence. It's valid to 09/06/2025, the day before my 70th birthday. I just hope I still am then. :)
Another player just entered the ballpark for me. I renewed my car insurance a couple of days ago and their adviser told me that I might have to send them a certified photocopy of both photocard and counterpart for all drivers named on the policy. I told him that, as I still have a paper licence, I could only send a copy of that. He replied that the insurance company insisted on a photocard, so my insurance would be invalidated if I was chosen for this check.

Thankfully, the documents arrived with no demand for a copy of my licence, but it is a concern and I hope that the insurance adviser was mistaken.

Then he was talking out of his rear end. There is no requirement for a driver to have a photo-license to validate cover.

Looks like the DVLA are making a concerted effort to get more people to cough up...
