The police ran a check and promptly told him his license had 'expired' and that he couldn't drive another inch. They towed and impounded his car (approx £165.00 + £20.00 per day). He questioned the police why his license could be expired when it clearly displayed it was still valid and they just blamed the DVLA saying they were working through batches at a time and just expiring them.
I would contact your friend & make sure he's got the right reason for the tow of his car.
A driving licence expires on your 70th birthday, that's law!
The DVLA has no power to "expire" anyones licence before that date... however it could have been revoked which is a different matter.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
I've had the renewal letter reminder, however I'm a tad confused as it states on my license that it was valid from 18-07-08 to 11-04-13; can anyone shed any light on this? I passed my test in 2005 so surely renewal should be in 2015 or 2018? Please LMK :mad:0

When did you originally get your provisional licence? If it was a couple of years before you actually passed your test (say 11-04-03) that would explain the photo card expiry date.
Or - have you any medical condition which would mean you get a shorter duration licence?0 -

It is the paper counterpart to the photo licences that is being phased out by 2014, not paper driving licences.
Apparently there are plans to phase out paper driving licences, but no timescale has been announced.0 -

It's 19th January 2033 when all old-format driving licences stop being valid across the EU.
Assuming we're still in the EU by then, I guess!0 -
I completely forgot to renew mine, I had the letter and did it last night online. At the end it says that I am allowed to drive while I wait.
I have a courtesy car coming on thursday because some work is being done on my car, they want to see my licence but the only one I have is my expired one... Any ideas what I should do? The guy on the phone said ring the DVLA and get them to ring them to confirm I am allowed, Is this the best way? Im working every day so its a struggle to call between now and thurs!
Thanks0 -

If it was the photo you were renewing, your licence has not expired, it is still valid.0 -
My husband had a hire car after an accident and had a call with the DVLA, during which they reminded him that his photo had expired. No problem getting the car - his licence was valid.0

If you get a reminder to update your photo but you are now working abroad in the EU and have been for the past year, what should you do?0

I'm epileptic but haven't had fits for many years so I have a normal license, renewed last time with no problems. I applied for a new photocard license the day my DVLA letter came through (2 1/2 months ago). Last week I got a letter from DVLA "We have written to (your GP) and expect to receive a reply within 6 weeks. When we receive their reply we will then consider your fitness to drive. Our enquiries can take some time to complete so there is no need to contact us as you will be notified." Today - 2 1/2 months after I sent the form in -my photocard expired. Probably someone in DVLA put my application in the bottom drawer and just found it. I'm likely to be at least 2 months with no valid drivers license. No license not because I have any points on it or drove through any lights (I don't) but because I did everything by the book and DVLA messed up big time. I:mad: have a wife and 3 kids - today I had to cycle to work in the snow. Tomorrow I can't drive my daughter to her music class. Do I have any comeback?0
