It was getting tough in 2006 and the workhouse still threatens us in 2011

True, we get regular gales, quite a few of which do serious damage, but it never gets the news ... even the Grampian news will often show the weather as a cheerful 'breezy' when it's a force 9 out there!
I guess one good thing is that as we are used to gales up here this is just like one more, but we're always aware of the damage they can do regardless and tend to act accordingly. The most tragic of course, being loss of life, such as that experienced by deep sea or other fishermen, etc.
The hatches are battened down here, the wind is quite strong and rain keeps coming and going but as someone else mentioned, it's a very warm wind, which for the north of Scotland is very weird!!"Ignore the eejits...it saves your blood pressure and drives `em nuts!"0 -
Up here (nr JO'G) they have issued us with a yellow triangle for the storm. When they did that before, it was less wind than we have had on our typical windy day :rotfl:
Still best to be safe and nail down anything that might move...the compost lid being the most likey thing to fly off.
Just received a subscription of Country Living that we got with the T*sco vouchers. Tis my little indulgence (and free) so that will be nice every month. Cuddled upto the stove with it now.0 -
We have the wind here in Manchester too and its warm! Its getting stronger and darker by the minute. Think I may well have a day indoors, its safer. Just going to check everything is tied down outside.
Got plenty of Christmas stuff to occupy me, bought 'simply homemade' magazine yesterday, my one vice, so as there were loads of freebies with it I may be crafting all day. tea is in fridge and freezers full so I can take it easy. Apparently Mum got me loads of bar-b-que drumsticks for £1.50 from Lidl so must shift the freezers round in a bit to make room. Going down Monday and taking her a little heater we bought for Dd's old cold house as Mum needs a back up. She has taken in all the advice I have gleaned from here and is seriously stocked up! I am pleased as my brother, who moved her near him when Dad died, lives in a world where money is for buying wifey new clothes everyday and is as useful as a chocloate fireguard:mad:
Also got her a stool from Mr M so she can sit and organise her cupboards.Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -
It is windy, isn't it, Ginnyknit? I've just watched Hepzibah Hen's 'bloomers' being ruffled by the wind, much to her disgust :rotfl:
My parents visited today and they took me to Asda (I don't have a car). I did a mini stock-up. However, I had a shocking moment when I found Napolina tins of tomatoes. They were charging £1.23 for ONE TIN.
£1.23 FOR ONE TIN OF TOMATOES :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
I was so shocked that I collared a shop assistant to ask if the label on the shelf was correct. He pulled a thoughtful face, took a tin and went to check. When he came back he said yes, the price was correct as that was what they were scanning through the tills at. Not surprisingly, I said, "I think I'll leave it then," and he said, "I don't blame you!" They weren't even organic tomatoes! Well, I know I can find them cheaper elsewhere so that's what I'm going to do. I did think of GreyQueen and her stock of toms under the bed, though!
I have such a ridiculously low-level lifestyle and diet (no dairy and now no wheat) that to be honest, a lot of the price rises have passed me by. I've also had a huge stockpile that I've been working my way through whilst I've been unemployed over the summer. So to some extent I've been insulated from the price hikes, but this really hit me. I usually shop at a local wholefood co-operative where they pay themselves a low wage and deal directly with producers, so the price rises have been cushioned. This was the first big shop I've done at a supermarket for a couple of months and it was a real eye-opener. I know on another aisle they were selling KTC tomatoes for 35p/tin but even that is a 5 or 6p rise since the last time I bought some.
Still, we're all in it together ......
Sorry for the rant, but I knew you would all understand the shock!
Roseanne I am glad you are having some happy moments with your little cat.
Mrs Veg Plot, look after yourself!
Have a good Saturday everyone.

My god that must be dearer than Harrods!
I paid £2.40 for a tin of heinz baked beans in 2002. I was on a thai remote island and when I saw them my tummy just said YES
They were just in date and sold from a shack but I didn't care. They tasted so good0 -

I've been gardening (half heartedly) and putting stuff away in case the wind picks up. It's currently 20 degrees and sunny so I hope the forecast is wrong
.
Pulled the last of the brocolli and beans out of the veg beds and popped in the hens. They think they're in heaven. :rotfl:The veg beds are caged so if the wind picks up I can shut them in and they won't blow away. :rotfl:
Picked another 2lbs of ripening toms to finish inside and binned a few past it plants. Left some others but I doubt they will produce much more now.
OH is DIYing in the kitchen (fitting the woodburner) so I am banned and we may just resort to fish and chips for tea.0 -
