I do all the decorating because I'm very fussy about colours :) - bedroom is currently palest rose pink as its a big room and tends to look cold. Ikea birch furniture, grey carpet and woodwork.
  • Good evening all...

Thought I would de-lurk and say hello to you all. Old Style Moneysaving is my favourite part of MSE and love reading all the lovely helpful tips etc. This is my very first post and hopefully won't be my last.. :D

I love gardening and growing my own fruit and veg. I make jams, chutneys & jellies and have been really busy the past few days using up my gluts of tomatoes etc. We keep our own chickens which we love, they are so funny and have the added bonus of giving us lovely fresh eggs. :T
Bye for now and look forward to getting to know you all. :j

  • When we bought our house most of the rooms were blue wallpaper, this had to be stripped of because the plaster had blown. At my request the whole house was painted Magnolia, I had spent 25 years married to the ex who was stubborn & colour blind, where every room was painted migraine inducing lurid colours. I just wanted it peaceful and plain. Hubby has gradually repainted all of the house since we moved in & now we have a terracotta kitchen & teal living room & it all looks lovely.
Yesterday I picked another 2lbs of beans & 3lbs of cherry tomatoes, lettuce, peppers & cucumber & hubby dug up another 20lbs of potatoes. Today I'll pick a cabbage for lunch.
    Hugs Hester

Enjoying reading about colours! Our bedrooms is magnolia, haven't painted it since we moved in a year and a half ago although most other rooms done. I like white and we have white cotton bedding. Our last bedroom was painted white. Some people think it's very clinical but I find it really calming and simple. We bought a couple of bedside lamps (cream) yesterday, the touch sensitive ones with 3 setting. It's lovely to have matching soothing looking lamps instead of black spotlight/ study lamps! We recently cleared any clutter from our bedroom, including all shoes etc from under the bed, and I can't tell you the difference it's made to how the room feels.
Off for another mug of tea then a shower and walk the dogs be having a good look through the fridge and menu planning. There are a few things to use up - anyone able to help with what might not be good to use? I have half a pack of tofu, opened since Thurs. Also the gammon, roasted last Mon, still enough left to put in with pasta and sauce - would it still be ok? I don't have a cast iron stomach unfortunately but also hate throwing out food. We've been busy over this long weekend for DH so have sometimes come in a heated up a pizza from freezer instead of 'cooking'. We did have quorn chilli and wedges last night though as we sat on the settee watching Strictly. DD came over as well so we really enjoyed that. DD and I had some Lambrini. It's a fab cheapie drink if you like white wine spritzer type of thing and aren't looking for high alcohol content! I think the bottle was £1.70.
Ok, off to boil that kettle - got it yesterday from Te$co Home - it';s a fast boil Breville for £14 in their sale. Our last one had a broken clip on the top and the steam used to sneak out and burn me. Not nice when you're bleary eyed in the morning.
    Have a good day folks

Hardup Hester, if you wrap your cucumber in aluminium foil it will stay firm for weeks. A few weeks ago we were given a cucumber in foil from OH's parents greenhouse. I decided to leave it in the fridge to see how long it would stay firm and after 3 weeks it is still looking good.

Thank you to everyone who is posting on this thread. Yesterday this thread literally saved my day. Feeling a bit low at the moment since my contract is ending at the end of this month and every spare moment is spent filling in application forms or preparing for interviews. Yesterday I spent a few hours sitting in front of the computer and then lost my motivation. Thinking of this thread I decided to go out in our garden and spent half hour or so cutting lavender to hang and dry in our utility room, I have thought about that for weeks but have had no inspiration to do so. Afterwards I felt so much better and more motivated and the utility room now smells really lovely.

Like so many of you we are also facing a tough winter this year and every pence that we can save will make a difference to us. This is the first winter that we are having a wood burner. We have bought 60 straw logs for £49.99 to keep us warm this winter together with our paper logs and other free wood, I am hoping that will last us a few months. I will put the date in our diary when we start using it so that we can see how long it will last.

Have a nice weekend and keep those posts coming in since I enjoy reading them.
