It was getting tough in 2006 and the workhouse still threatens us in 2011

Wishing you well with your cat and Happy Anniversary.
....and...yep...walkers are mad...as in "go out in any weather". If I waited for fine weather only - then I wouldnt get out for many walks. Also - there is an advantage to going out walking in bad weather = the worse the weather, the fewer other people are out and about (walking or otherwise). Well - the cardrivers still are - but not so many pedestrians:D
MARYB - Didnt know that re the seasalt. I just assumed "gotta buy seasalt" - rather than that cooking salt from the supermarkets, as its much healthier. Didnt realise it HAS to be the coarse variety for preference (no matter - if one needs it to be fine - just get out the grinder and have a "quick whiz" with it).0 -
Thanks Kittie. Just read the BBC weather and am off to staple the chickens to the coop!0

I have been awol for a few days the thread seems really quiet....
Thanks for the concerned pms :A. I have just been fed up with illness dragging on and frustrated at my lack of get up and go. Have had a good word with myself (as has OH) and I am going to try to be less annoyed by my limitations.
Getting ready for another weekend on DIY. Or he does it and I supervise.Want to get out to the woods at some point and collect some more fruit before the storm hits and it all gets blown away. Am going to admit defeat with the garden and start clearing pots and baskets and getting some bulbs in for Spring too.
Whatever you are all doing today, I hope it's a good one. x0 -
Hi Guys, too many posts to catch up on so kind thoughts to those needing them, and well done to others. Mardartha I particularly recall your posts about your stove - I'm so thankful for mine as winter is arriving - hope you get it sorted soon.
Well I'm going to tidy up the rest of my garden - have winter veggie plants to put in but this weekend doesn't seem like the right time to do it with the winds just now. Youngest is at sea today, and then the boat will be moored safe for a day or two - although he'll be up early everyday just in case of a break in the weather and they can get out!
Stupidly busy here now, college has returned and I decided to get it finished with - its my last year and was going to go part-time this year, give myself a better chance of a good result, but circumstances have changed and i'm back full-time. On top of work its a huge commitment, so no time for crafting or other such fun for WCS until next summer.
Prices seem to have shot up again here, i'm having to make serious decisions about purchasing fruit - so so expensive and my garden fruit didn't really happen this year. Looked at the brambles yesterday but they're still green - this happened last year and with the bad weather they didn't come to much, so keeping my fingers crossed that this year is better. I'm really going to have to come up with something to deal with soaring food prices - it's just getting so hard, and we're fortunate to earn a decent salary. I was reading something yesterday about the balance of wealth shifting again - the richest 10% in the world own 85% of the wealth, and scarily the poorest 50% own only 1%. I'm not for a minute implying that any of us are in the poorest 50%, but times are changing.
Anyway sorry for the ramble, off to batten down the garden,
WCS0 -
I'm the poorest bloody 1% but I'm still here and still TALKING
Yes I miss my stove so much. Told the RV if it comes to human sacrifice to get things done then he's history0 -

Broke my knitting needle
Hopefully i can get a new one this weekend - tho not sure there is anywhere at my dads, where i am heading.
A friend brought round lbs and lbs of cooking apples the other day - and our freezer was already full to bursting. So we had a soup and pudding tea yesterday - homemade soup to clear some space in the freezer with HM bread. FOllowed by HUGE portions of apple crumble. Son was a bit shocked to be presented with just a bowl of soup for tea - till he realised he could have as much apple crumble as he liked. and we have about 16 portions of crumble in the freezer!
MIL was round for tea and was a bit shocked when she picked up the jug with a little bit of left over custard and said "shall i throw this?" and me and OH yelled "NO!!!" I think she is starting to realise how frugal we areThe same with the one slice of bread left over - SHE WAS GOING TO THROW IT AWAY!
My garden is in need of some serious attention but i don't seem to have time. So tired right now - not sure why but might have something to do with the fact that i am training for the Great North Run next week and now having to do a lot of walking to get to work. I reckon I have covered 22 miles on foot this week. I'll be glad when the run is over and am slightly regretting putting in for it, tho i am assured it is a great experience. I just hope i finish on my feet on the same day i started!
Off to my dads to get him prepped for winter, in case things do start as early as they are saying. I am going to get him in some bottles of water, long life milk, dishwasher salt (for the snow), candles and a small camping stove.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -

This morning I turned on the news as I would quite like to know what is happening with the storms heading towards Scotland as we have friends and family there. There was hardly any coverage!! But the fighting abroad gets a good 20 mins. Now I know it is bad but it is on all the time and surely something directly affecting our country should get a little more air time??? I then popped onto facebook to ask my friends if they are ok and the powers that be wonder why people are getting their news from other sources rather than the TV or papers.
I wonder if it was heading towards London would it get more air time ?0 -

Hmm. We had 100 mph winds back in May (West Highlands) which brought down power lines, 3 trees in our road alone, washed huge yachts ashore and closed many roads and it didn't make the news at all. :cool:0
