It was getting tough in 2006 and the workhouse still threatens us in 2011

Scottish Minnie - quite often GPs have one day a week or a half day where they don't do surgery so they can do paperwork (I know my brother does) so if you can find out when this GP isn't available you can try making appointments on that day and then it will make sense for you to have your follow-up appointments with whoever you saw then
in a lot of practices it is unusual to see the GP you are registered with, and some people just see whoever is free. I used to see a different GP specifically for my back problems as he was a specialist.
Hope you can sort it out.0 -
squeaky- I make sweet potato and roasted red pepper soup. Maybe roasting them first might help with the burping. I recommend adding lemon juice to cut the sweetness.
7 week wonder- I did clean the oven. I hope you ignored any swearing that I may have done and had a couple of twinks on my behalf *tries to resist giggling at how that may be interpreted*
As far as weight is concerned, the wii fit and my Dr know my weight and no one else is going to. I know I need to lose weight, as I have high blood pressure, but I now see the trainee GPs at my surgery. I got so sick of my normal GP having a go about my weight every time I saw her for anything that I stopped going. I did try to get a referal to the gym on a special scheme, but nothing seems to have come of that. It probably got lost in the round of council cuts.
I'm going to get back in the habit of doing Zumba on the wii and hide the biscuit tin..................After my birthday on Thursday0 -
Redlady if you go to a proper chemists and ask for genuine turpentine oil and tell him what it is for he should sell you some. It removes paint without harming the fabric.0

I can't eat any supermarket bread. It sends my heart into an erratic rhythm and it pounds away for an hour or so. I can eat bread I make at home, in small quantities. Maybe I've found the reason
That's horrifying! I too get bloated by eating shop bought bread, I just put it down to a vague wheat intolerance and tried to eat less of it.
'animal guts' for goodness sake!
I'm an omnivore and that turns even my stomach!
Thanks for that though...it just makes me more determined to keep making my own."Ignore the eejits...it saves your blood pressure and drives `em nuts!"0 -
I'm about 8st4 and my doc is always telling me to put on weight! I'm 5'3 ish. Trouble is when I do it ends around my tummy:o
Now that you have made that comment as well - then added to the earlier ones of being told by a couple of posters that their doctor told them to achieve a weight that is underweight (according to height/weight tables) - then I wonder if doctors as well these days are going by BMI rather than by the old height/weight tables?? Hence why they are getting it so wrong sometimes.
At 5'3" and 8st4lb you are an absolutely perfect weight according to the consensus of opinion on height/weight tables. That IS the optimum weight for a medium build woman of your height.
Of course - I've just assumed you are still quite young??? If you are middle-aged or older then he might be really saying "Put on that extra 7-14 lbs weight that a lot of people recommend once you reach that age". Well - thats his view and its a common one. Not all medical opinion agrees with him and I wouldnt mind betting that those super-healthy/very long-lived races (eg the Hunzas/Okinawans) would come nearer the lower end of the height/weight tables (though one has to bear in mind the much healthier lives they lead/food they eat than the British usually do).

Re the supermarket bread - cottonwool compares favourably with it IMO. I would experiment personally if unable to eat standard bread with:
- bread made with spelt flour
- sourdough bread (in case its yeast thats the problem)
- sprouted wheat bread (this is available from health food stores - though...ahem...its NOT cheap - think its about £1.70 for a small loaf??)
I like sprouted wheat bread and suspect its probably the healthiest type of bread there is - and its on my list of projects to try at some point to make my own (as the title says - it involves sprouting wheat - so it takes a while to do - ie start making it some days before its required....).

Re Zumba to the poster who is talking about doing that - cor...that will knock the calories off fast if done regularly. I wondered what it was until I saw a display of it and thought "Crikey - thats big-time energetic - they must be absolutely shattered after quite a short session of that".0 -

'morning Squeaky
I'd have thought it takes quite a degree of "being brave" to "monitor" us sometimes:rotfl::rotfl:
After that - the soup will be a doddle:rotfl:0 -

Does anyone have an idiot proof guide, please, for making sourdough bread? Am I right in assuming you need to make a starter first? I think I feared the 'fiddly-factor' of it and that's why I haven't really made it."Ignore the eejits...it saves your blood pressure and drives `em nuts!"0 -
I'll have to show my daughter that bread article.
She was never one for bread even as a child but nowadays whenever she has it its made her feel realy poorly.
She bloats up like she's six months pregnant and gets realy bad cramps.0 -

You are right in assuming a starter is necessary.
Its not one I've actually made personally - as I've never quite made up my mind whether I like it or no.
I'm sure someone will come along soon with info.
