It was getting tough in 2006 and the workhouse still threatens us in 2011

Also have some left over beef from our sunday roast - does anyone have an easy recipe for beef soup?
I make a beef soup with leftovers but it's my own invention and just uses what I have to hand. If you fancy trying it... I sweat diced carrots and leeks in butter until soft, add a little cornflour and top up with beef stock, Add barley and presoaked green spilt peas and bring to the boil. Once simmered and the pulses are cooked. season to taste. and add your chopped beef. To vary this I sometimes add tinned tomatoes and chopped peppers with a little oregano and basil.
Yellow split peas tend to be turned into dahl in this house or I recommend THIS recipe.
Had a very successful day foraging yesterday and a lovely meal with friend here last night. I even whipped up some of the mushrooms with garlic and parsley butter for our starter. Loads more mushrooms to be had so will go out again soon.
Have a mad day of errands ahead from one end of the town to the other and we are having trees felled too so need to manage that and get OH to organise the log store for more wood.
VERY autumnal here. Even the children commented on it last night and I was coerced into lighting the fire.very lovely it was too and as the wood is free I suppose it doesn't hurt but it's August for crying out loud.
Hope you all have lovely days.
ps ScottishMinnie don't let anyone get too scientific with you about your weight. As long as you are healthy it is no one's place to judge. I look like a starvation victim at the lower end of my "ideal weight" with bones protruding everywhere _pale_. I am tall and very happy with my weight. My children both look whippet thin but are heavy in weight so there is such a thing as build to take into consideration. xxx0 -
I wouldn't consult magazines or beauty books (whatever they are) for healthy weight guidelines. I don't believe there is a 'correct' weight for 'looks purposes' - surely thats entirely up to the individual what weight they feel they look their best at - be that 8 stone or 14. IMHO weight loss should be about health not looks - I have some slight health issues that will benefit from me loosing a stone or so but I actual like the curves I have at a slightly higher weight - I look like an ironing board at less than 9.5 stone!
BMI is useful to a point unless you have very high muscle mass but its not the only indicator of health - I have a friend who is much larger than me but has better resting pulse, pulse recovery rate, lung capacity and blood pressure than me due to the amount of exercise she does...People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

special K apparently. but I suppose you could pinch an inch if you had loose skin and not get an inch if your skin were so tight with fat you could not get hold of enough.0

I've made loads of soups using this site and every last one of them has been brilliant!

I know I'm overweight but take exception to my GP who told me on Friday that I should be between seven and a half stone and seven stone twelve. I'm eleven stone so that makes me three and a half stone overweight (or according to her, obese). at 5ft 4 I've never been that weight in my life, was eight and a half once and looked ill. You could have impaled yourself on my collar boneo I was so thin. Wretched woman doesn't have a clue but the problem is she would only give me 3 months contraceptive pills instead of 6 and told me to come back in 3 months when she expects me to have lost at least the first stone. The fact that I'm fitter than I was 20 years ago and my blood pressure is spot on doesn't cut it - her exact words were "your fitness level is of no interest to me, you fatness level is what I'm aiming to sort out".
My MIL had the same sort of comments from a nurse recently, can't remember the exact BMI she was told but it would have put her in the underweight category, she is overweight but not to the extent that this silly cow was saying. Anyway I did some reading on BMI's as I have come across info on them previously. Apparently they were originally meant for measuring trends across a population and are inaccurate and irrelevant for individuals.
I'd tell your GP to take a hike.I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly

Red peppers, any of the capsicums, have me belching for almost twenty four hours! Reet gals - Squeaky wants to divert us onto soups - as there's an edge of "personal comments" coming up here (again.....:() (and I want to know Squeakers if you're planning on writing a novel any time soon and getting useful "research material" LOL).
Fave soup - French Onion Soup and its useful to think of adding things like a bit of cooked rice and curry powder to vegetable soup and think "mulligatawny-ish"...0 -
I like !!!! A Leekie, haven't yet been able to make it successfully though, and Minestrone.
Yike! I wasn't swearing, honestly! Um...I like (male chicken) A Leekie!"Ignore the eejits...it saves your blood pressure and drives `em nuts!"0 -
i just got "A Celebration of Soup' by Lindsey Bareham - an amazing array of recipes there - it was in a collection of 8 classic cook books for £5 from the book people and is a real gemPeople seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.
