I do not have the RTA to hand.

    However

    1) The police will act on the national insurance database to stop cars without insurance

    Correct

    2) It is standard practice on all insurance policies I have seen that the "driving other vehicles" clause demands that the other car being driven is insured.

    No it's not

If you are stopped (1), and cannot demonstrate that you are insured (2), I'd like to see the relevant piece of law that states that the police cannot collar you for no insurance at this point, as you are, indeed, driving a vehicle which is uninsured. Else what is to stop every 17 year old from insuring a 1.0l Micra then going out and buying an Impreza and not registering it with the correct DVLA address?

How about giving them your registration number. They check your car and if it says on the insurance page you can drive other cars then your on your way.;)

Under 21's don't get covered to drive other vehicles.

That's the part I was referring to. I'm pretty much sure that that is universally the case, for normal fully comp policy holders to drive another car they don't own on their own policy the car they want to drive also has to have insurance insurance held for it by another party. A traders policy or other such doesn't suffice either.

    Stop posting your uninformed crap.

How would you test drive a car for sale at a garage then?

    You are certainly wrong!

Why post anything so authoritatively when all you have by way of confirmation is "I'm pretty much sure......."

I said I was pretty much sure because not only is that my personal experience but not so long ago I asked a traffic policeman.

    Why post your uninformed crap?

They have traders policies covering test drives. I've never test driven anything on my own insurance from anything other than a private individual.

Well come on the back up your claims with something other than hearsay tosh. How about a link to something we can all read.

Yet did you not post traders policies don't suffice?

I'd stop digging if I were you.

That is 2 totally different things. Test drives at garages are covered by the garages own trade policy. Why would they not be?

I referred earlier to wanting to drive another private car that is not specifically covered by another policy. For example, you cant have a fully comp policy on your car, borrow one from a friend who has a traders policy and expect to be covered.

After looking around I concede I may have been mislead by the traffic bobby. What I posted has always been true of policies I've held to my knowledge.

I'd ban you from driving forever and probably lock you up for a few years as a deterrent to the other dimwits and abusers who flout the law without any due care towards those poor sods they come into contact with.
    Bit over dramatic much!
