Caught with no insurance
Its not good I know - my policy was apparently cancelled at the end of May by my internet based insurance co. due to the June payment DD bouncing...1st I know about it is when I was pulled over by the police on Friday (22nd July) - but it gets worse....my MOT had lapsed too - it ran out on the 1st July, I thought it was the 31st & had that in my head as I know it corresponded with when my tax disc was up at the end of this month. So I hold my hand up to that as I should have checked but I was so sure it was end of July..... anyway long hideous story short, got £60 fine for no MOT, £200 fine & 6 points for no insurance & they came & towed my car away the next day (so another £150 or so to go get it out again).
I dont know how I am going to do any of it as been claiming JSA for past 5mths - have managed to get at least 1 part time job that starts next week but is only 12hrs/wk so hoping I can still claim JSA til I find a 2nd p/t job top top it all up....
anyway - my father is proposing to get a 1 day insurance on the car to at least get it out of the pound & tow it to his to store in the drive (its now declared SORN) & is talking about HIM taking out an insurance policy on the car & having me as a named driver thinking that will be cheaper than me trying to get a full policy under my name with these fresh 6 points for no insurance.
My prob being - i HAD 6 points on my licences (2 x SP30s from April 2008) - now these have come off the licence in terms of they cannot be used to tott up with the ones I have just received on Friday which should mean Im not going to get a ban, BUT insurance companies want 5yrs worth of info which would mean according to them I will have 12 points against me (2yrs before its down to 6) AND 1yr ago I had my car written off in a crash - my fault so despite there being no damage to anyone else (drove into a bollard) so no claim as such, they had to write my car off & make a payment....
Do I even stand a hope of getting insured again (Im 36yr old female), or do you think, as I do, that id be wiser selling the car & waiting carless for 2yrs until at least my speeding insurance part is dropped ... I dont know what to do - not got any quotes yet as conviction for no insurance not been processed yet & dont have them on my license yet.....
what are my options for any of the above?? I know it looks horrific but I AM in actual fact a law abiding responsible person, I have never knowingly broken the law or would in a million years - my 2 speeding tickets were for 36 & 38 in a 30 zone - both in the same week when I was having major major troubles with my boss at the time & on those 2 days had driven home furious & therefore took my mind off the speedometer....an easy thing for anyone to do. The MOT was an absolute genuine mistake - ive been driving 18yrs & have never ever driven without one or without insurance - the insurance company have said they sent me out a letter & as I didnt respond (I never got it!! hand on heart) they cancelled the policy & theres nothing they can do. Im not going to contest it, just want to know the best option for getting back on the road - if its even worth it. Ive dusted off the bike... thankyou in advance for any pointers. Also wondered if I can ask to pay fines off slowly due to limited income??

Don't know how much your SP30s added on to your premiums for the past few years, but your IN10 will make a heck of a difference.0

being honest and yes harsh you dont seem responsible enough to driveIf You See Someone Without A Smile......Give Them One Of Yours0

You have a further issue that will make your premium astronomical - your cancelled policy will have to be disclosed to all new insurers you approach, meaning that you won't be wanted by the majority (if not all) off the peg insurers.
Your idea of giving up driving for a while won't help out on this issue (they want to know if you have "ever" had a policy cancelled, as would any insurer being asked to insure you as an additional driver on a friend/relative's policy).0 -
Basically - you will get insured again but it will be a lot. For now, i'd be looking at a decent pair of shoes and a travel card until you get your finances in order. maybe sell the car.
I don't want to get all moral on you 'not noticing' that the insurance was out. You would have had a bounced notice from the bank, charges the lot so i find it hard to think you wouldn't have known.
Also, 30 zones are 30 for a reason - usually because they are an area that children are likely to be in. A bad day at the office does not excuse speeding, especially when your speedo would have been registering over 40 so you shouldn't try to justify it.
Apologies for the rant but those points just rankled.
5t.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
hardly mum of one - apart from this incident 2 speeding tickets in 18yrs of driving doesnt make me a bad driver - 6 & 8 miles over the limit isnt in the same league as doing 100 on the motorway for example (fivetide) - i paid the fines, took the points - every single driver has at some point prob on a weekly basis gone a few over the limit - its so easy to do & not intention, when you are into the tens/twenties over the limit then id deem that as intentional thanks. Plus my banking is all paperless & nothing comes out to me at all - all done online, so entirely my fault for not looking at my bank account for a well over a month, but with nothing more than JSA going into it & all unnecessary DD's & SO's cancelled months & months ago when I got made redundant & had to sign on. My fault - Im not trying to cast the blame onto anyone else or shirk the consequences.
All I have asked is what options i have for insurance. And quentin you are right re always declaring cancelled policies but my idead to give up the car for 2 yrs was to allow the speeding convictions to lapse the 5yr ruling of declaration in order to appease the pain of what I know is going to be sky high premiums as it is .....so looking at it all, seems its the only option to sell the car & wait 2yrs so its only my 6 points & cancelled policy I have to declare....0 -
Normally the advice would be to do some dummy quotes online to see what difference 12 points make rather than 6, but in your case it may be that you cannot get any online quotes (mainly due to the cancelled policy, but the 12 points won't help!).
Before making your final decision, try a local broker for some quotes (with 6 and 12 points as well as a cancelled policy) - at least you'll know the (current) worst!0 -

Firstly, no you are not a law abiding person. Secondly what your father is proposing is illegal. It is outright fraud and known as insurance fronting. It would mean your insurance is again cancelled even if you were paying for it and you'd be done for no insurance yet again.0 -

6 points for IN code will still mean eye watering worth more than the car insurance quotes. Insurance companies don't like paying out for uninsured drivers and they unanimously use premiums to punish anyone with an IN offence code on their driving licence.
In short, motoring for the next half decade is going to be quite rightly very expensive.0
