I nearly took your word for it, but I just checked by going to confused.com.

I did a quote for a 36 year old woman, with 8 years NCB, no accidents, an office worker, with an SP30 and a IN10, and declared Yes to having insurance cancelled... £420. Hardly eye watering. Ok, so the OP has two SP30's, I didn't do an exact quote for her, but still...

Being a woman, you have to do an awful lot to get a high insurance quote in my experience...
I pay way more than £420 and my record's a lot better than hers.

Gives me a wee bit of hope - havent run any through yet as assumed I had to have my licence endorsed 1st....but I had protected my no claims prior to me running over a concrete bollard thankfully (put into 1st instead of reverse coming out of a parking space - stupid!! ripped undercarriage of car badly hense right off) - so have 10yrs no claims....still as my premiums were £70/mth with 2 sp30s into the £400s is nasty.

Buts thanks for all the USEFUL replies received so far.

Here we have the expected (and to a certain extent justified) judgemental stone throwing and hidden in that a couple of gems of real useful advice …..

Do you still have the SIGNED policy document and could the insurance company offer any proof they WROTE to you cancelling the document.
An insurance policy document is a legal contract and they are only certain ways it can be cancelled.
If you feel that the insurance company did not write and cancel the contract you could plead not guilty and call them as a defence witness and question them upon what steps they followed to inform you they had cancelled this contract.
The magistrates will have to consider if it was valid or not.
Defaulting on a credit agreement does not automatically cancel the contract, that has to be done in writing with proof of postage.

Think of the punishment handed out as an effective ban. Technically you could insure another vehicle, but it will cost you an arm and a leg. As already mentioned, get somebody else who is insured to drive other vehicles with the owner's permission to collect your car. Declare it SORN and then sell it. If it's not insured, you're possibly going to get the new automatic fine for owning an uninsured vehicle, so sort it asap, or get somebody else to insure it.

I think the £420 dummy quote is per year not per month

'Just thought i'd mention that gettign 1 days cover to collect the car doesn't normally work
I know the pound we send our cars to will not release one without a 12 month policy in force
Extaxtly that. I've had a couple of short term policies over the last few years and all the policies I've had clearly state that they cannot be used to gain the release of a vehicle from impound.

Which is why the police need putting back in their box and reminding that they are there to enforce the Law, not make it up as they go along.

Ever read the FAQ's for one day insurance companies?
I've just googled a few and none of them allow you to use their temporary cover to collect an impounded vehicle.
Nothing to do with police making rules up

That is an insurance policy which provides no cover for releasing impounded vehicles, it is not the same issue as the police dictating that you can not use one that does not have that exclusion, if the police are doing this they are acting unlawfully, but then again, thats never stopped them before.
You do not insure a car, you insure yourself to drive it, the insurance companies are running a cartel, which is been enacted by the police on behalf of politicians acting on behalf of share holders of lloyds of London.
The automatic fines for keeping an inured vehicle off the road are just the latest in the line of such money making protection rackets, this country is descending in to a corrupt third world despot dictatorship run on behalf of a few at the expense of the other 99.999%

And the country is secretly run by David Ike and blue aliens from the planet zog who came to this world disguised as the Knight Templars...:rotfl:

Suffice to say, this thread asked for advice, and correct advice is that one day policies will not allow the op to collect her car.

thanks - will ask the pound, havent phoned them yet - was going to do so tomorrow as they told me they'd be doing the paperwork today so to leave it for a day or so.

Does anyone know re the post below if another fully comp with 3rd person on other cars can retrieve car then??

Only if the car they are retrieving is insured in the first place which clearly it isnt otherwise it wouldnt be sitting in there in the first place.
