Ikea kitchen quality - Any good?

We've just had the yellow/white kitchen put in - Used Ikea on the recommendation of Brother-in-law who is very sucessful builder/property developer. He swears by the quality and value.
Love ours - We went for oak wooden worktop - regretting that a little as it makes the room a little dark ( wish I'd gone for the beech which comes up nicer IMO).
Is the oak worktop very delicate or high maintenance? I like the kitchens but am quite confused about worktops.. wood ones are lovely but i'm worried they get burned/scratched easily, and i don't want a cheap plastic one.. (I have granite at the moment, which is very resistant)0 -

You could get your worktop elsewhere. The IKEA base units are great, as are the doors etc, but IMO the sinks and worktops are not so great.
Only thing is that standard worktops are 600mm deep, and for an IKEA kitchen you'll need 620mm which usually means buying breakfast bar and having it cut down to 620mm which bumps the price considerably. Or if you like granite buy a custom fit granite top.
I'm just finishing installing our IKEA kitchen and have been very impressed. Whole lot cost us about £2700 split like this:
IKEA cabinets (tidaholm aok): £1150
Worktop (laminate, including cutting and butt and scribe joints): £450
Appliances (hob, double oven, extractor - all Siemens): £1000
Sink + tap (Franke): £200
To me thats a bargain... similar quality kitchen package from elsewhere would have been around £8k - £10k.0 -
Another vote for Ikea kitchens here!:)
We used the adel kitchen in off white with oak tops last time and currently have tidaholm units in boxes waiting to be installed in our new home. I have the Boholem (?) sink in my utility which is getting a lot of use as we are renovating the whole house and washing paint trays, plaster buckets etc in there. So far so good but it is early days! I was disappointed with the ceramic sink which we used in the adel kitchen which scratched although I was very careful with it.
My OH loves the easy assembly and thoughtful design that goes into all of their units and is quite happy to put them together.;)

PS we have bought the Pragel worktops, any thoughts on those please? The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

Where did you buy your appliances?
Appliances Online. Very impressed with both their prices and service. Delivery was top notch - 2 hour time slot with constant text message updates. They'll try and sell you some crappy insurance product on the phone after you order but just politely decline and its all good.

I was a little worried about having wood, but thought I'd give it a go. It's actually really forgiving and I've stopped being precious about it - it doesn't seem to mark at all. I did put on 5 coats of the varnish....
We also used appliances direct and got a great deal on a range cooker - excellent service.Aug 2011 £95500 aim to pay off Dec 2019

You put varnish or oil? I wouldn't varnish a worktop.
I've had wood before, it's ok and durable. You do have to pay attention, but that's pretty much the same with every worktop you can buy. My worktops were oiled.
They do mark but you can sand the marks off and scrub the worktop clean. Red wine is a pain and so is metal - leave a coin or a tin on the wood and you'll be greeted with a lovely ring, but as I'd said, you can sand those off.
I'm getting corian for my new place, mainly as I like no dirt between sink and worktop (corian sink will be integrated), plus the stainless sink was doing my head in as I live in hard water area. I just have to persuade my OH that it's ok to pay the kitchen price the worktop only :A0 -
We have an Ikea Tidaholm kitchen, in the main house, put in over 9 years ago, still love it.
Thought it was so good, we also put then into our two holiday lettings, and people comment on how nice they are, one is stat, and the other is the other oak version, cannot remember the name.
My sister bought an MFI one, and the drawers are total rubbish, and the cupboards are shallower.
We just ran the services underneath the units, much easier to remove a plinth to get at, than behind a unit.0 -
I've had my Ikea kitchen for about 4 years and love it! If I was to replace again, I'd go right back to Ikea without even looking elsewhere
We used their fitters and couldn't fault them. They did a LOT of work for us in addition to installing the kitchen (knocking down walls!) and they were efficient, polite, clean workers, tidied up after themselves-and didn't eat millions of biscuits!0 -
Old thread I know but I need some advice regarding the size of the units from Ikea.
Do you have to buy Ikea appliances e.g. single oven or will any oven fit? Someone told me that it can be difficult to install alternative appliances....or were they just pulling my leg
Also, the worktops. I've read this thread and others and noted that it's best to buy an alternative. However, I need a wider worktop? Is that right? If so, where could I buy it from or does it have to be "custom" made?
I'm looking for a white kitchen. Any pictures out there of your own kitchen for inspiration please
Many thanks0
