I think the colour and style of Vanessa's hair are more the issue, she seems to be emulating a Barbie doll, it didn't suit her when she was young either.

Helen Mirren has shoulder length hair and its lovely on her, Susan Sarandon and Sigourney Weaver are in their sixties but still look great with longer hair,

I think Helen Mirren looks much better with a short cut (as she has now) although, in general it is hard to tell with stars as the pics we see are airbrushed. My point really referred to the average woman and I mentioned Vanessa as a reference point.
  • I love having short hair... I had longish hair till I was 17, then I went and had it all cut off, and have never gone back... I think I suit short hair, it feels right on me, and I like it to be quite a sharp, sleek cut, with a strong colour (very dark brown at the moment - considering going blond, but want to look more annie lennox than pat butcher!).

Last time I went to a new hairdresser, she kept telling me how well I suited short hair... it's hard to judge for yourself sometimes, and I have thought about growing it, but once it gets pastr a few inches long, it starts driving me crazy, and I feel so dowdy... back to short hair, and I feel like myself again!

My hair is practically waist length these days but with 2 small children I virtually always wear it up in a bun or a ponytail and OH loves my long hair. Over the years my hair has been everything from no 2 close shaved to as long as it is now and I'm lucky enough to suit it at various lengths. I'd love to chop it all off really short again but it grows so fast I would need to have it "done" every 3 weeks or so and there is no way we could afford that so long it stays (much to OH's delight).

If you need some more inspiration, here it is. Sharon Stone and Annie Lennox are another two examples of beautiful women who look stunning with short hair. And Natalie Portman was just the cutest thing in the movie "Closer", she looks miles better cropped or with a short bob.

It really depends what suits you and how it makes you feel. A woman can be sexy no matter what her hair looks like, if she feels sexy.

I agree with this. And have also been very surprised by some negative comments to short hair. I've never given any thought to the length of someone's hair, just its condition (healthy?), how clean it is and whether it suits the person's face and personality.

Women can do what they like. I do however wish more mothers would cut their daughters' long flowing knotty straw like locks that look so unattractive on young girls. Not to mention unpractical. Who cares if 'they won't let me cut it', it can make children look so scruffy.;)

I think Fern Britton's hair looks fantastic in that link.

It also made me realise that as well as disliking young girls having long hair if it looks unkempt, I also dislike older women having it too, if it's in bad condition. I saw a woman last week with very thin, waist length black/grey hair. It was incredibly greasy. She wasn't even an older woman, I thought she looked about 60 but am wondering if she might have been younger (50?) but with unclean, unstyled hair in poor condition that aged her considerably.

As I said in my previous post I personally do not like long hair unless it is very thick and preferably not dead straight. I also agree that long hair has to look very clean to look good. I realise long hair is a pain to wash but it seems a lot of women with long hair don't wash it anywhere near enough. Also amazed how many women have long hair that looks as though it has not been combed for a week! Don't know why any man would find unwashed hair sexy

Short hair is definitely more interesting. Long hair is usually boring unless an unusual colour or very curly.

A lot of women seem to have long hair whether it suits them or not. Very thin hair looks awful long as does, in my opinion, grey hair.

I hardly ever brush my hair. Its wildly curly and brushing leaves it a frizzy mop. It gets done gently when there is conditioner in it. I comb it through well with my fingers when its wet.

I'm reasonably content mine looks ok....I get complimented on it a lot.:o
  • I'm in my mid-20s and have an ultra-textured, short, bleached pixie crop. On average, I get about five compliments everyday on my hair, which is great.

I've got an oval face with high cheek bones so I know I can carry off the crop and it stands me out from a crowd far more than my bob, long layers, short layers, should length, centre parting, side parting hairstyles (believe me, I have had tonnes) ever did.

What always fascinates me is that hairdressers often ask me 'what does your partner think of you having short hair?' in the way that they wouldn't to a woman who didn't have short hair. I just find it so bizarre!

What do you think of cropped hair on women? A recent example is here.

If you are female, would you ever go for a crop? If you are male, do you prefer your lady to have short or long hair, and why?

I personally think that crops look fantastic on really pretty women with good cheekbones and a nicely shape cranium! Kylie is a case in point.

I did, years ago, and was very, very happy with it... It was amazing how many compliments I got, but I was 26 and happy with such a radical change. It really brought out my features and it was flatering on me. I have kept bobs and more of less longinsh hair since and soemtimes I feel the urge to tkae it all off...becasue it is so clean and simple.
It is liberating and I think it looks great on people with nice features.
I woudl go for the yes, but if you are unsure, get a good stylist or soneone who know you well.
