Anyone else giving up smoking?

  • I found an interesting site for anyone still struggling with those urges to smoke.

Its called Cognitive quitting and it puts into perspective why we reach for a cigarette even when we are quitting.

It definitely helped me to realise why I still wanted to smoke even though the withdrawal symptoms have gone.

    Give it a try Here

Hey Ragtime, I gave up on 4th Jan too. Smoked my last ciggie at around 10.30 that night. I smoked for a slightly shorter time of 22 years! I'm finding it surprisingly easy this time and I just feel soooo pleased with myself for having done it. Thanks for the cognitive quitting site, it's all ammunition in my war against smoking!
  • Hi Boatie, were you a heavy smoker?

I smoked 40 a day (on a good day!) for 23 years, reading that back and feeling like I do now, I was an idiot!

I am reading everything I can find about the benefits of stopping and other peoples success stories, like you say, its all ammunition.

What worries me slightly is, I feel wonderful at the moment but I wonder if a few months down the line, I will forget how bad it was and have just the 1 cigarette, I really hope I don't so I need to get it confirmed in my mind how bad it really was and what a fantastic thing I have done in stopping smoking!

Here is a link to an Allen Carr interview which made me realise once again what a brilliant thing we are all doing by stopping smoking.

  • I only smoked about 10 a day on a good day, maybe up to 15 on a bad day, but occasionally up to 20 when I went out for a night.

I worry too about a few months down the line - I just hope I can remember how tough it is for the first few days. I thought to myself at the time 'if I don't ever smoke again then I never have to go through withdrawal again'

I went to the pub a couple of days ago and I managed to get through that ok. And don't forget that the smoking ban comes into force soon (June or July I think) and that will make it even easier.
  • I'm on day 5 now. After all the good work that I did last year (that was then undone) I'm back on the patches and so far so good! Well done everyone!
    Quit smoking 18/08/07

Just got back from visiting my smoking friends, they were all huddled at the back door in this weather fagging it, i must admit i did feel a bit left out(sad isn't) and that little voice was in my head go on one won't harm you but i did'nt and feeling a bit chuffed. Becasue i know the hard way it only takes one and you get the craving again so why go through all that so one smelly fag!!
  • Well into my fifth day without one now (after previously smoking 25 a day for 14 years), which is the longest I have gone without any nicotine (cigarette or NRT) since I got hooked. It's definitely getting easier and the cravings are less frequent and easier to deal with.

After a zillion failed attempts I feel as though I may have finally cracked it (don't want to be too complacent though so I won't be heading for a celebratory pint at anytime soon - my usual downfall!!)

Well done to everyone - keep it up. If I can do it, anyone can!

Gave up new years eve and been cold turkey since. So 11 days in, reckon I've probably saved somewhere in the region of £30-35 as was on 15 or so a day and more at the weekends.

Tried last year but relapsed pretty quickly, seems to be different this year, ive not been tempted once, even after being out to the pub a couple of times.

Keep on keeping on you lot :D

Hello, just noticed this thread and thought I'd join in to give/receive a bit of moral support! My first day of not smoking today but I have worn a patch. Worst bit was trying to get the sticky plaster off my arm when I took it off.
