We had a lad like him at school, who sold his 'product' in matchboxes. He wouldn't tell anyone what it was, but we could see it wasn't the usual sodium chlorate & sugar we were all used to messing with. Every year, around Guy Fawkes night, he would bring the stuff in and do a brisk trade. We used it for the usual pranks young lads get up to....:o
I heard through Friendsreunited that he died recently, so I guess that's something we'll never find out about now.0 -

I don't speak about it over there, but we have a very quiet follower on the 'Daydream' thread. I have met her a couple of times now...:)

Yesterday was most def a rain day...it rained for virtually the whole blooming day! Sun is out this morning and by hook or by crook, I am going down to the beach rather than over to the swimming pool...although that may involve physically dragging the boys into the car to do so (they are less than enamoured with the idea)
Yesterday afternoon was spent driving my parents around to the shops they want to visit, what I hoped would be a quick nip up town (they only wanted a kettle and a new battery for a watch), ended up being a 4 hour slog of parking up, going to a shop, moving the car and parking up somewhere else, going to a shop, moving the car and parking up yet again and so on and so forth. I was blooming knackered by last night and all my spoons used up...it was most def a double crutch night to get over to the club for entertainment.
Used up the last of my sausages (from the BBQ) last night making a very yummy toad in the hole, money is lasting well...Wednesday I spent the grand total of 70p (lots of reduced bread and cake items from Rainbows) and yesterday was 29p (yorkshire pudding mix) even with going to the club - free jug of water for all of us.
No loss of fun either....who needs bags of money on holiday! We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

They feel better if it goes to someone we know, so they feel they still have a connection with it. They do understand that some stuff does have to go to the tip, and some has been freecycled, but they hate it. It helps if we take copious photos of things before they go. However we did it and wherever it went, they wouldn't handle it all going at once. It needs to be gradual.
As far as food is concerned, they are fairly typical fussy eaters for their ages - although he's the older one and he's worse than she is. When we go places, I like it if they are offered food that they may not have come across before and may not like, so they have to try it - it's good for them and sometimes widens their horizons gastronomically. But I also like it if the hosts aren't offended if they don't like it, and let them eat bread etc instead. They both like eggs, so at your place it would probably go down well if they could go and collect eggs from the chickens and then cook them. We do have one friend who keeps chickens, so it wouldn't be a complete novelty, but they'd probably enjoy it. I eat most things apart from hot curry/chilli and big black mushrooms - I'm really quite OK with little button ones.lostinrates wrote: »BTW you and FC were on the nose about friend. As it happened I was required to say anything much at all (thank god) but I like the jerk even less now. Oh well, I don't have to live with him!
Glad you feel you got through the evening without having to say much if that's what suits you. Personally, I'm the interfering type, and quite like the chance to try to say things that might possibly help in situations like that, but I know I'm unusual in that. So far, I haven't lost any friends over it.
Sorry I can't help with your experiment, missk - I'm the wrong kind of scientist. But it did make me remember a conversation I had with my dad (another scientist) when I was contemplating giving up the idea of a research career after my PhD. He said "If you can't enjoy research even when the experiment doesn't work, then you shouldn't be doing a research job, because it doesn't work most of the time." That's why I'm now teaching.
(Not that I'm trying to say that you shouldn't be doing research, or that you shouldn't be sharing your experimental woes with the NP, just that I understand that an experiment not working is "one of those things". My PhD experiment didn't work for one reason or another until half way through my fourth year. You have all my sympathy, and my admiration, too, for succeeding in a job I couldn't hack.)Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
I love mushrooms, onions, garlic and red meat...cannot stand spicy stuff though.
At our BBQ, I did a poor mans version of hog roast, one joint of pork shredded slightly rather than carved, some apple sauce, multi pack of baps and some stuffing and Bob is your uncle....and it is satisfying, cheap (it fed six of us at the BBQ and then another 5 of us for lunch the next day) and very very nice.
In York there were hogroast sandwich shops!
They were absolutely lovely!I'm in!
I've never done this before so i may need help
Excellent news sss555s!:j
The more the merrier.
If you need any help (as if!;)) pm me or post here.:) Should be straightforward enough for a clever bod like you though. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Glorious day here today. Sunny, 25C. A little humid. I walked for 90mins at lunchtime out to Potts Point and back past the old C19th terraces. Days like today I love being in Sydney.
I picked up some great steaks today to have with homemade b!arnaise too. It was like one of my old Friday jaunts to Borough Mkt only without the cheese. Good cheese is illegal in Aus.Aw..thanks.
Real-time is easy.
I'm trying to amplify bisulfite-treated DNA to determine methylation status and I can get one set of primers to work but not the other set. There is a trick I'm missing but I'm not sure what. If any of that makes sense, I can PM with more details.
That sounds fascinating. What language is that in? I want to put through Google translate.0 -
Are we in for another Global Financial Crash or is this just a correction? FTSE is down 3% today, and 7 - 8% on the week. Various talk that Italy will default on (ahem, I mean reschedule) its debt. Any thoughts kind people?
My only thought is that my investment last week in a S&S ISA was badly timed.:(It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Wohoo! I have internet again, after my broadband getting fried by lightning (literally: it was the only thing fried, unlike a neighbour who lost their chimley).
Positives: you guys
negatives: 500 emails to read.
See you later.
Was thinking about you the other day & hoping you were well. Glad you are home & the damage was minimal!vivatifosi wrote: »I just read that and have no idea whether you are talking about technology, vegetables, a PhD rig, your car or something different. Just to explain the comment about being a nice-people stalker... I've:
1. 'rolled an easter egg'
2. worked on the census
3. seen fc's pop-up shop
4. was offered some daily mail numbers from last weekend
and I
5. work in science
I think thats about it
I've lurked on the house prices board since before it became 'hidden'lostinrates wrote: »Do you still feel shy?

Nikkster, you're obviously an intelligent friendly person. We spoke frequently at census time, and you showed yourself to be highly eloquent too. You'd be made more than welcome here, as I'm sure would so many other lurkers.:)
You may officially class yourself as a nice person.
LIR makes excellent points above.
LIR I hope your mouth is better soon.:AIt's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0
