Tax the car and let the tax disc go to the old address. At least then it will show up on the computer as taxed.

I thought legally you were allowed to drive to your MOT test, to prevent people being stuck in the no MOT=no tax loop.

misskool, I thought you got married October 2011 not 2010 - has time flown? Shouldn't you be Mrskool now?

i meant to say pass the salt...but it came out as WHY DIDN'T YOU RENEW THE CAR TAX YOU B!TCH?!?!?!

    :)

i am actually getting a bit panicky now. the car is untaxed which means it is uninsured. luckily it is in a private underground garage so it is not going to be clamped and crushed, but i cant take it out on the road and the MOT is on wednesday.

i can't get the tax done on line because i haven't bothered to get the V5 updated so it's still got my old address on it, so they'll send the tax disc to my old address. i can't get the tax in the post office because i can't find my sodding insurance certificate (this is almost certainly the gf's fault as she constantly disrupts my careful "pile it on the table" filing system).

so basically i should just file the serial number off the car engine, remove the plates, drive it up the road and set it on fire and then start again!!
    Grr,lost reply.

Do not panic, this happened to me a few times. First, ask for new insurance cert today, you are allowed to drive it to the garage for mot untaxed. So, by end of week, early next week, you will have the right paperwork and can tax from jan first in a po.

no absolutely not, but you should always aim high when opening negotiations on employment conditions! although i do have 40 days holiday this year due to carrying over a load from last year, but i doubt i will get to use it.

sabbatical is unpaid, but you get your job back at the end of it and stay in the pension scheme etc.

LiR what is your policy on sabbaticals, i forgot to ask?

Sabbaticals, paid in edible weeds and peacock feathers of two months. Rest of the terms aren't suitable though . I'm looking for one and a half days a week, including shopping time, paid in eggs and returnder compliments.

i don't think that's right. i think if you have declared it as off the road that's fine and your insurance is valid on that basis, but if you have just not bothered to pay for the tax i think your insurance is void. edit: although i don't actually know and am basically making this up!

come to think of it, this happened last year. i will never learn.

This is correct. Your insurance policy will likely state that it is valid provided that your car is taxed & MOT'd (whilst on the road).

The grey area would be is it insured off the road in between tax discs... I'm not sure about that & that is likely to be in the T&C's.
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

I can't see the logic of that. The insurance isn't there just to protect ythe car owner, but third parties as well, so it wouldn't be in the public interest for the insurance industry to work in that way, surely?

I renew on-line and then carry the confirmation print out around, just in case. Around here, being stopped for showing no tax disc is about as likely as seeing the Beast of Exmoor. :)

When they brought in (awaits NDG's confirmation/wrath for correct/incorrect use of brought there:o) online tax discs, they changed the law allowing a grace period of 7 days following the expiry of a tax disc, as the law dictates it is the displaying of the disc, not merely having purchased it.

things have got really crazy with banks. I can't apply for a bank account because I don't have more than 12 months permission to stay in the UK but I have lived here legally since Oct 2003.

    yesh sir

Tell me about it. When I came here (2000), I presented my employment contract and HSBC gave me a current account with 500 overdraft and also threw in a CC with 5K limit.

Mrs. Wheezy is here since 2005 and all she could get was a SOLO account. Impossible to get anything more, so we turned my account into a joint one when we got married.

Costs £1000 for ILR application in person.

I thought that was a typo first, but indeed...from wiki:
ILR Fees were introduced at £155 in 2003. Following record immigration in 2004 - 2005, mainly from Eastern Europe, for the main applicant the fee was raised in 2005 to £335,in 2007 to £750, and in 2009 to £820.

I don't remember exactly when I got ILR, but it must have been prior to 2003 as I don't recall paying anything apart from some small admin fee.

Ha! I beat the system by using my certificate of motor insurance for this year which starts on 14 Jan, and the post office person didn't notice. I win!

  • Who has had the new V5 (?) Registration Document for their Car?

Anyone had any experience of the change over? I need to relocate a car but only have the 12 year old documentation.

Do I follow the instructions on that in this modern world?

[Here in cowboy land it is not unknown for vehicles to be registered at deserted barns - it is not unknown for the resulting speeding fines to arrive at said empty barn]
