It's all very odd, and I know Dh would like reason and unbiased NP opinion on today's events but it's just too public here. Certainly what happened today neither of us could have forecast. It's very much out of the blue. Dh is so strained he's saying he's not sure whether to trust its a good thing, especially as the gift horse (Trojan?) was proffered by you know who. We're both getting a little weirded out, to the point I have wondered if I should change ids on here. Surely not, if anyone had the time to gain insight to Dh from a pseudonym that could possibly be his illiterate wife they are not busy enough at work, right? I am aware however, any one who really knows us would know this is me. I think the people who know you can always make trouble anyway though, if they were so minded. See, I'm at it now too, seeing a good thing as a potential bad thing.....
Starting again, in brief, good news, we're staying here for a while!lostinrates wrote: »yeah. I know people I know do. Tbh, with most people it doesn't bother me. But perhaps I need to take a little step back.
Otoh I also sort of feel, apart from dh's stuff which perhaps i should be more cautious about, I post sincerely and stand by what I post and am glad to be challenged and educated when I am wrong...
Have to say, opinions, whether supportive or challenging, from NPs are often useful, give great perspective or support.
I know what you mean.I wouldn't fret to much about your anon status...I am sure it's fine and you don't write anything that would offend anyway...just how you feel mainly (well...that's my view from reading your posts).
Maybe someone saw 'sense' so him not having to work away (which I guess is the final outcome) is a good result for now. I read your recent post about not feeling to great right now physically.......so hope that resolves in the spring for you and you feel better.
I have a stack of stuff I would love to gossip about on the NP thread as the differening viewpoints from people so unrelated to my sector is great and, I agree with your point, they can give a different perspective on how one feels about an event or something.
Sadly, I can't gossip freely as I would have to put so much identifying info into it.:(
We learnt something about ourselves recently which is that we have to have almost, total freedom of mind and action and to run our biz to suit us and us alone. To tow someone elses corporate line just wasn't possible any longer with something.....not because we are 'disobedient' as such, more that we can't be told what we are 'allowed' to do or not. Fortunately, it was only 5-10% of turnover so neglible financial impact as that percentage will be recouped fairly easily now we are free.I like the old feet & inches, but I can work in metric just as well. Quite often, I find myself using both on the same job.
Ah....come to think of it, that might explain a few things.
Me too but it can cause havoc especially with pattern cutting and factory specs. I even have 2 graders squares, one in inches (from my college days) and one in metric and switch between the 2.
I am with PN, cannot visualise in cm but have no problem in feet and inches.
And, finally, OH had a hernia alert. He had a slight swelling on one side of his belly and, as he spent the weekend making a fabric storage unit frame (the size of a large bathroom) and had to carry up twelve 8' x 3' sheets of MDF up 9 flights of stairs, one at a time as wouldn't fit in the lift, his tummy hurt a bit too.
I had a google (never a good idea when self diagnosing;)) and off he went to the GP today to discover no hernia but his recent weight loss hasn't been 'even'He has shed about a stone and half but, apparently, it takes a while for the fat deposits to spread about again because he's 'older' ....bit like a lumpy old sofa.

on the bright side, ILR is still cheaper than the fine i'm going to get for having an uninsured, untaxed car and not updating my V5.
pffttt £80 fine

Costs £1000 for ILR application in person.0 -

yeah it's annoying as my insurance runs out on the 14th, so i have my renewal certificate showing that it will be insured for the whole year to which the tax will apply, but not flippin insurance for last year. i'll probably try it on anyway, but i expect the computer will say no.0 -

Do they pay you for a sabbatical?
I would love a sabbatical but then I wouldn't have a job to come back to after the 6 monthsI don't qualify due to not purposely staying in the country for the right amount of time.
1st degree oct 1999-june 2001
home
2nd degree oct 2003-dec 2007
work permit mar 2008 - oct 2010
spouse visa oct 2010-oct 2012
Anyways, not a big deal until the last year. Financial institutions just started applying this rule.
So you can be married but then have to leave if your visa isn't renewed? Seems unfair.0 -
chewmylegoff wrote: »i meant to say pass the salt...but it came out as WHY DIDN'T YOU RENEW THE CAR TAX YOU B!TCH?!?!?!
i am actually getting a bit panicky now. the car is untaxed which means it is uninsured. luckily it is in a private underground garage so it is not going to be clamped and crushed, but i cant take it out on the road and the MOT is on wednesday.
i can't get the tax done on line because i haven't bothered to get the V5 updated so it's still got my old address on it, so they'll send the tax disc to my old address. i can't get the tax in the post office because i can't find my sodding insurance certificate (this is almost certainly the gf's fault as she constantly disrupts my careful "pile it on the table" filing system).
so basically i should just file the serial number off the car engine, remove the plates, drive it up the road and set it on fire and then start again!!
You sound like you need cheering up. You have a PM :rotfl:0 -

what about the county court judgement and fine of £1,000 i'm going to get, and i think it is another £1,000+ for the V5. mind you, they can't actually send me the fine for the v5 or tax as they don't know where i live.
yeah, a grand for ILR, and then another grand for citizenship the year after, and no money back if you 'fail' i think? yoo0 -
chewmylegoff wrote: »i don't think that's right. i think if you have declared it as off the road that's fine and your insurance is valid on that basis, but if you have just not bothered to pay for the tax i think your insurance is void.
come to think of it, this happened last year. i will never learn.
I can't see the logic of that. The insurance isn't there just to protect ythe car owner, but third parties as well, so it wouldn't be in the public interest for the insurance industry to work in that way, surely?
I renew on-line and then carry the confirmation print out around, just in case. Around here, being stopped for showing no tax disc is about as likely as seeing the Beast of Exmoor.0 -
Wow, is that what you have now. Nice deal

no absolutely not, but you should always aim high when opening negotiations on employment conditions! although i do have 40 days holiday this year due to carrying over a load from last year, but i doubt i will get to use it.
sabbatical is unpaid, but you get your job back at the end of it and stay in the pension scheme etc.
LiR what is your policy on sabbaticals, i forgot to ask?0 -

well given that the objective of the insurance industry is to pay as few claims as possible it seems to make sense to me, i expect they might still pay out to anyone that you had crashed into, but if you rolled your car or something you might find you couldn't claim. anyway, i'm too chicken to take the car out until it is taxed so it's immaterial i guess! bet someone steals it tomorrow.0 -

Sounds like a nice idea....I haven't heard of that before in companies just in colleges/unis. What heappens to your job? I mean, do they employ someone just for the 6 months to cover?
You could go on a tour of the UK in a campervan....the entire country.:)
One day, OH and I are going to have a gap year and go clockwise around the coast line of the whole UK. We reckon it'll take a year and we may have to cheat up in Scotland and miss a few bits out.
Figured we could do a blog and guide to independent boutiques in coastal towns for the whole country.....just to give us something to look for when we park up in each place. Or best Fish and Chips but we couldn't eat them every day.0
