in 1890, the average farm worker had a salary of 42 pounds a year. Even by 1911 that only went up to 74 pounds. The measuring worth comparison fails to get across how much money a shilling was before the war.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

I like the old feet & inches, but I can work in metric just as well. Quite often, I find myself using both on the same job.
Ah....come to think of it, that might explain a few things.0 -
Decimal's handy for calculating, but you need feet and inches to measure things so you understand the size of them
I've no idea how tall I am in metric.0 -
While we're talking aboout crime do NPs feel TV's sherlock is getting better and better?:D
Didn't enjoy last night as much as previous one: less psychological crime and more sci-fi. I thought you could sense the Doctor Who dna. Loved the "mind palace" scene though. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? And I can thoroughly recommend it - I'm close to completing 5 years of that now

I know of a man who was a gardener during the war. He got 6 shillings a week, plus a cottage to live in, and free vegetables - that is, his gardening job included growing veg to be eaten by the family who employed him, and provided he grew plenty for everyone (which he did), he and his wife/kids could eat the free veg from the garden too. I believe the package was considered a reasonably good deal - he certainly seems to have happily stayed with the same family a long time.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
On the petrol week go to the Dome roundabout as the petrol there is much cheaper than at LC where they charge 'off motorway' prices. Check out the specials on hukd or the sains website fitrst and buy those or do what I do - buy an iron or similar costing 40 quid to take you over £60 and return it a week later.
There is a Total station further south on the A41 that is (a) nearer to me and (b) usually cheaper than the Dome roundabout.
I don't think it worth going to sainsbury just to get 12p off fuel, probably worth it for £12 off a £60 spend. Whether its worth going back a week later to return something I doubt and I don't really play those games.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
