Mine needs crushing but it may be a case of pet rescue.0 -
Yeah, it was part of the cost of joining the European Union. They changed it to new money in order that we could easily switch to another decimal currency at a later date.
Old money looks difficult to our eyes, but it is a matter of training more than anything: people used it for hundreds of years without trouble.
It was on the cards for a long time before that - the Florin (2 shillings, so 10% of a pound) was introduced in Victorian times as a first step towards decimalisation, and actually said, "one tenth of a pound" on it....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Oh well, will see how I am tomorrow before going into too much of a panic.
Hope it's just a day under the weather and you are better tomorrow....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Yeah, but, they spent hundreds of years talking about it and didn't really make very much progress. Besides which, normal people wouldn't have seen many florins in their lifetime.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

The reason why children traditionally learnt their times tables up to 12 times was because there are 12 inches in a foot and there were 12 pence in a shilling, so the 12s were really key ones to know.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

it's a good job I only managed to learn my times tables to ten times. I was always stuck with 11s and 12s. I was born decimal!0 -

Not a massive amount, though:
In 2010, the relative worth of £0 2s 0d from 1890 is:
£8.58 using the retail price index
£10.50 using the GDP deflator
£41.60 using the average earnings
£61.00 using the per capita GDP
£101.00 using the share of GDP...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

I was so depressed at work today, first time I've been in since 21st dec. I can take a 6 month unpaid sabbatical now ive been there 4 years. Sorely tempted! Not that there is anything I would do with the time off except not work.
Why not try your hand at being a live in stylist, shouting "go girl", suggesting which shoes and underwear to wear and manhandling boobs and getting well paid for it. If men were silly enough to pay women to do this I'd happily do it.0 -

It's a funny job that. I know someone whose been quite successful at it. Earns enough to have bought a half million pound house outright a few years back. I just can't imagine it. Have googled it in the past to find a few locally, and tbh, they all looked really uninspiring iand were pictured in there uninspiring beigey homes wearing beigey things. I'm guessing from this part of the trick they must teach is when to aspire and when you are overreaching, and I'm just not prepared to resign myself to beige yet. At least gok wan is colourful and he alters things, so is a bit creative and I like that in a person.0
