Just posted this elsewhere, but thought I could use it here too and get double value. After last night's fiasco with a firework which nearly set fire to the utility room roof, I can see that the tea leaves don't bode well for 2012....
Not a major drama, but having decided to study the local river for ...ahem....'personal research purposes,' I set off with New Year vigour on a walk to ameliorate the effects of too much plum duff. No one else in the house was up for this.
He of upstairs omnipresence must have been aware of my mission, however, for having reached the furthest point of this particular trudge, the heavens opened as something like a mini-hurricane suddenly came whistling up the valley, turning quite a nice afternoon into a maelstrom in a matter of seconds.
I decided there was nowhere to hide, so I just trudged onwards and eventually reached the shelter of the pine wood, whereupon the wind dropped and the deluge turned into a gentle, misty drizzle again. By then it really didn't matter; I was drenched. I know I looked bad, because when I reached home, the cat, sheltering under the shed canopy, fled.:rotfl:
So, today's score: God 1, Beelzebub 0.
Still, there will be other days and another 3 miles or so of river to chart. Today's bit was rubbish. :mad:0 -

We had a brilliant day yesterday. Topped off by spending Midnight on the terrace of Somerset House watching the London Fireworks and loved it. What a fantastic atmosphere and the noise from the fireworks and boat
Horns! There must have been more than 250,000 people. We walked into the City and the crowds just kept coming and coming from the opposite direction. Even our hotel is in a slightly random backstreet and there was a full stream of people walking to Lord Knows Where. All very good natured. I'm glad we were where we were, there was loads of space on the terrace, it would have been much more terrifying with the children down in the mel!e for hours.
Doozergirl, you must have walked past my and ndg's favourite Indian restaurantPasturesNew wrote: »Just Googled that. PDF Menu, with photo of the building

I was not out celebrating last night (not feeling too good) but I did look outside about 12:10 and it was quite spooky like an Alien invasion. It must have been fireworks at that time but they looked like groups of aircraft travelling towards my house (Orangish lights) and then way past, they kept coming for about 15 minutes. Anyone any idea what kind of fireworks they may have been, I have never seen anything like it before.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. My night went exactly to plan and I enjoyed every part of it more than I expected. Lets hope it's a start to a good year
Zag. Did you catch any of Jools last night? It was excellent :T
I saw some of it, Cyndi Lauper was hot to trot (musically that is).'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. One thing about last night was the venue was bleak/remote... and the people I was with turned out to represent about 60% of the entire clientele. Before midnight everybody else had moved on to their "preferred midnight venue" and so the whole business/building/event was open and running just for the little group I was with.
Having done the midnight thing, then a quick Auld Lang Syne, it all then closed down.
It's all a bit different/bizarre down these parts. Imagine that:: you and your few friends could enjoy the complete run of a place, with free buffet and easy access to the bar, with discounted members' prices on booze. Nice... but unexpected. I'm guessing if one tried to hire/host an event there, exclusively, for the night it'd have cost hundreds.... plus the food bill.
I'll vote it MSE bargain of the year.0 -

They were probably sky lanterns, which glow orange when up high even if they're coloured green, or whatever. If a group of people release theirs at the same time, they will travel together in rough formation for a while. Where I was last night, it would have been too windy for lanterns, but I saw a single one go up the valley a few days ago. They can be a nuisance because cattle have been known to attempt to eat them etc.
DW and I once witnessed a strange formation of three orange lights which moved together and changed direction several times at a great height over our last home. The direction changing ruled out lanterns, but we couldn't work out what else they might have been.
I've also seen distress flares fired on a wild night during a college Rag Week, and they really did look like alien spaceships travelling in formation, so one has to keep an open mind when observing something 'weird' in the sky.0 -

Did anyone see the first in the new series of Sherlock tonight? Wow. Serious wow. I'm not going to say anything about the story in case someone has recorded but it was phenomenal. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing?
