Which would NP choose - 3k net earnings or 9k paid into a pension?
3k net earnings.... nobody can take that off you once you've got it in your hand.

But then I have no pension :)
So £9k in a pension would be pointless for me.

It's not like you really need all that future money - take the £3k now and make a commitment to spend it on stuff that matters now. Time with people, experiences.... memories. £3k of memories banked is better than gambling you'll live long enough to ever see the £9k.

Despite the fact that we are all equal why do men and women read different types of books?
Being equal is not the same as being the same.

You might as well ask if we're all equal how come fat people prefer pies.

9k in the pension. 'specially with the govt talking about scrapping higher rate tax relief on pensions. It's going to get harder to accumulate a pension in the future I think.

Unless i was off to Vegas next week of course.

We do seem to be headed for a GFC again, don't we. Any suggestions what to do?

Am advising my dad to move my parents' money about a bit. They've got lots in a joint savings account. While they're both alive, it's covered by the FSCS up to £85k each = £170. As soon as she dies, all the money in any joint accounts will be his, and only covered up to £85k.

Don't have to worry about what to do with my own money any more because now I've bought this house I haven't got any any more.

In other news, I went to work yesterday. It was good for me to have an oasis of normality. I found I have no brain for planning ahead, but can busk a reasonably decent lesson if stuck in front of a class. I don't work Fridays so I'm off to see Mum again today. I've got parents' evening at my school tonight. I've told them I'll be back for it if she's still alive, but if she dies today then I won't be there. My HoD is being supportive - not just him, actually, but everyone.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

OH just had to make a similar decision, though the difference is less stark, he went for the pension.

LydiaJ, I would expect that the staff are supportive, if you don't feel up to parents evening, I'm sure they'll understand.

If you don't need the money and you get the gross value from the pension, that's worth doing. Providing you have a good investment vehicle that is.

I read quite blokey books as I prefer non-fiction.

I have just finished reading Hello Dubai, by Joe Bennett, spurred on by the debate on the subject a few months back (I would recommend to anyone who is interested) as well as Max Pemberton's latest biography about his work in the NHS. This is my third Pemberton book and it is a fantastic insight. I also think its his best to date.

I am about to start reading a book about the code breakers at Bletchley Park.

    Here's some links:

    Hello Dubai: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hello-Dubai-Skiing-Shopping-Weirdest/dp/1847376746/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1322177399&sr=8-2

The secret life of Bletchley Park: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Secret-Life-Bletchley-Park-Codebreaking/dp/1845136330/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1322177528&sr=1-1

I keep thinking about doing an update of my recent reading. I have a seasonally topical book approaching, & was thinking about updating then.

Zagubov, the Replay book sounds interesting...

I remember one place of work having a small memo that went round asking people to cease using TLA's!:o
