How does the name thing work legally? Mrs michaels married me but remained Ms not-michaels as we were selling her house at the time and it just seemed easier but legally does the name change automatically on marriage? The school find it very confusing as the kids are little michaels's so they tend to send letters to Mr and Mrs micheals but everywhere else official she remains Ms not-michaels.
No, it doesn't legally happen automatically on marriage. A couple choose how they wish to be named post-marriage. Hence one can adopt the others surname (I know of at least 1 bloke who took his wife's surname), they can stay as they are, or one or both can adopt a double barrelled hybrid. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
No - google is not helping me on this one, please explain.

Profumo scandal. When asked why Profumo had said something different from her, she replied along the lines of, "He would say that, wouldn't he?"...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

edit: I think it would be less fun if you were getting up to feed a little baby though...
We've thought of that one. Normal double bed in the spare room (-:...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
But what is in it for the mobile mechanic? He can not do the warranty work himself so I can see why if there is a dangerous fault he would want to cover himself by noting it and looking at worst case scenario but I can't see he has any interest in dissing the dealer if the car is not faulty?neverdespairgirl wrote: »Profumo scandal. Fair enough. It was just a joke, but it's lost a bit in having to be explained. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

But a woman can adopt her husbands name on the marriage certificate, or choose to keep her own name.
The other options (double barrelled hybrid etc) would need a deed poll / statutory declaration
Frankly, I always thought the double barreled option was a little silly. What happens after the second Generaltion?
Joseph Carl-Monson-Fotescue-Jones.
All a bit daft. Personally, I never understood why people don't pick a new family name if they don't like the old fashioned convention.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

Hmm - I wonder what our marriage certificate says...But a woman can adopt her husbands name on the marriage certificate, or choose to keep her own name.

thing is, say you work as a jobbing musician or actor for example and you suddenly disaapear because you were smith and are now jones? For many its easier to go double barrelled. Personally, it wouldn't suit me at all, and though I already wasn';t working by the time we were married, as was ill by then, I kept the maiden name alive by default .
DH and I did actually consider a new name all of our own, but decided it was too much of a faff, too self indulgent for us, and also, was going to be a point of contention with his family, so we relented and kept his Anglicised family name. After some dithering though. There are a lot of Anglicised names in his paternal family, some of which are not a name I'd have chosen and might have been prompted to just leave behind married or not! DH's ...well..mine is fine...it works well with my name...although at first I felt a bit like it sounded not disimilar to ''Betty Boop'' in the way it trips of the tongue.0
