The M5 pile-up is suspected of being as a result of a fireworks display nearby.
Somerset does seem to be the fireworks capital of england. They tend to start in summer and stop sometime after new year. We had one neighbour who used to fire them over a field with our horses and ...oh yeah, at that time we had some cattle part owned with a friend...I'd totally forgotton that...anyway...it was a nightmare. Special girl is amazingly resiliant about stuff like that bet even she was horrified.0 -
In other news, DS has agreed to start keeping a diary of the bullying if I will buy him a notebook for the purpose, "but not a girl's notebook with flowers or anything, Mum - get a boy's notebook, like black with flames or something." :rotfl:
Get him a plain one, he can draw the flames etc as he likes, and then cover it with sticky plastic?...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I adore fireworks. The bangs, colours, and wonderful autumn smell of magnesium....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

My dog's not loving this. Can't be let near the kitchen or he'll go barmy when he hears the fireworks.
Poor thing. Do you have the radio on for him to disguise bangs?
I feel sorriest for the hedgehogs and little creatures who've crawled into bonfires thinking its a palace to hibernate in and instead are roasted.
eta: speaking of hedgehogs, our no 1 hedgehog has almost trebled his weight since we found him. No2 we still can't sex....but we've decided its a girl, she's much more shy and reticent...how a wild one should be...she's almost doubled weight. They are incredibly cute...but they really, really stink. If we get more than two next year I might try and enlist some winter carers, because they are revolting to clean up after and smell. My cats thing they are great though.0 -
It's said that pet owners need to create a 'den' for their pets to run and hide in.
Today my plan was to walk down to the shop and ask people where the firework display was tonight as all the posters said where it was .... for locals only as it didn't actually have an address, just a one word thing that is 100% meaningful for locals
Anyway ... that went out the window when I got an 'old call' and had to rush off and do all sorts of things, which took up about 6 hours of my day, so when I got back here I just fell asleep.... and then it was too late to go out and start trying to find out where the display might be.
I am actually petrified of fireworks, but kind of had an idea that I'd be able to drive near to them and watch from a distance, sitting in my car.0 -

Having grown up in the West of Scotland Zag's seen enough anti-Catholic rituals, parades and festivals,
-and won't be sorry if the fireworks shift to Hallowe'en as in Ireland. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

A couple of years back we hosted a fireworks evening for a local kids group; I say hosted in "offered the use of our back garden". Garden is the right shape, long enough to separate kids from fireworks and patio area big enough that the kids aren't standing on the wet grass. I think there were about 50 children all together, at least 5 were terrified of fireworks, but their parents has decided they should still go.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
